let's go to our justin reporter evan perez in washington. evan? >> reporter: well, yes.tala has arrived here at this courthouse. there was a heavy police presence, helicopters overhead as he arrived a couple hours ago, and then he was brought into the courthouse. we expect that there will be a court appearance later today. this is the first time he has been on u.s. soil to face these charges that were filed against him last year here in washington federal court. now, he is the chief ring leader u.s. authorities say of the attacks on the u.s. diplomatic facilities in benghazi back in 2012 that killed four americans including chris stevens the ambassador to libya. what we now expect is that there will be a series of hearings over the next several months before he finally goes to trial here in washington. >> evan, we'll be most interested to learn of course to what extent was he cooperating while he was on that literally slow boat to the united states? is there anything known at this moment on that issue? >> well, we know that for the last two weeks ever since he was captur

evan perez, cnn justice reporter, and kenneth trump on national safety and security services. there were still questions about injuries to other students. at this point what do we know about that? >> we don't know if there were any other students injured. they're still clearing the school to make sure there is nobody else who is hiding and injured and gone somewhere and wasn't found by police in the initial search. one of the things that we know the police are doing at this hour is they're trying to figure out where the gunman obtained this firearm. we also know they are doing searches to figure out any history they can find on him. obviously, the social media, computer, anything written that may have indicated or may have given any signs that this gunman was looking to do something like this, randi. this happened obviously at the beginning of the school day. school year is wrapping up at that high school. the kids were looking forward to getting away for their summer holiday. and then this happened. right now the authorities are getting help from the atf and fbi at the scene t

intelligence agents on the ground, commandos on the beach, but as our justice reporter evan perez has in the end the bad guy really didn't have a chance. new details emerging about the capture of ahmed abu khatallah, a senior law enforcement official tells cnn u.s. special operations forces, including members of the fbi, arrived by sea over the weekend. the officials tell cnn khatallah was lured to a villa south of benghazi where he was apparently expecting someone else when u.s. forces swooped in sunday. we're told khatallah tried to wrestle with the troops. the key operative in ansar al sharia, the group the u.s. blames for the 2012 compound on the attack in benghazi was quickly apprehended and were told no shots fired, no one hurt. the official also tells cnn u.s. special forces did recover some form of media at the villa. investigators are analyzing it. after the capture, special forces whisked khatallah to the "uss new york" in the mediterranean where he's undergoing questioning. >> reporter: the main thing is to get the detainee, the subject, to a safe environment with a minimum

evan perez, let me go to you. you have the answer to one of the questions asked of the admiral, that being the tick-tock, if you will, as far as where he will be brought to the u.s. tell me about that. >> we expect he will be brought to the united states in the next couple of days, and he is set to be tried in washington, d.c., where the charges were filed last july. now, we first reported last september that these charges existed and the president confirmed them in a press conference a couple months later. but this has been a very complicated thing for the justice department, for the fbi and for the pentagon, simply because he was in benghazi which is obviously not very friendly territory, and before they capture someone, they want to go in with overwhelming force, and they assumed that perhaps they are going to get shot at and perhaps civilians might get harmed. it took a lot of planning to carry out this operation. we are told this is something they have been trying to do and planning to do for several months.

. >> evan perez inside the courtroom there, as it was happening. thank you. paul callan cnn legal analyst is here to discuss all of this, in terms of what we just heard from everybodyth that happened in there, i'm curious, who as far as you know, who is defending abu khatallah and what type of support is he entitled to get, even from libya? >> well, he's being defended as of today by a public defender. this is appointed council for someone who doesn't have enough money to hire their own lawyer, if he doesn't have enough funds to hire a lawyer, the u.s. government will have to fund his defense. in terms of whether libya will get involved, i doubt they would offer him support at all. no terrorist is going to slip funding to him. he's not going to get money for that, you may have u.s. lawyers volunteering saying that he has a right to council and they might get involved. >> let me ask you about some of the evidence against him. some of it was gathered, cnn was able to confirm through phone eavesdropping, is that -- how they built their case against him. would so

i want to bring in our justice correspondent evan perez who's standing by watching this as well. i'm sure you've just been privy to that information as well, evan, that the shooter has been neutralized. that is a euphemism for dead. what else do you know? >> this all went down about 8:00 this morning. it's probably at the beginning of the school day. as you mentioned earlier, it looks like the school year is about wrapping up at this school. so it appears there was a report of gunfire. the police have said there was a semiautomatic weapon that was used. we don't know if they've recovered it. we do know the suspected shooter is dead. the body language of the police that you see in your pictures there on your screen tells us a lot. it tell us they believe there is no further danger to them or to these kids. they wouldn't be filing out. we're talking about just an hour ago, so that's very quick for the scene to be resolved. so we know that they believe -- they believe the scene is already safe enough for these kids to be out and for the police officers to now be hunched over hiding f

evan perez has been reporting on what's going on. we learned the shooter went into the school, shot and killed another student. we don't know who the shooter is. we don't know the circumstances. earlier, we had been told that the shooter is dead. we don't know the circumstances surrounding how that shooter is dead. we learned from the sheriff in this county that one student is dead. >> right. that's right, wolf. that's sad news right there. we knew the shooter was dead and we just learned apparently he was able to kill another student before -- before he was killed. we don't know how the shooter got killed, whether it was officers responding to the scene or whether he did it himself. that's something that wasn't told to us. we also weren't told whether the shooter was believed to be a student. it's probably not surprising. because this is a thing that the police have to do, which is to first clear the building, to make sure there's no further danger. they know that the scene is contained. so therefore it's going to take some time bef
