now, for the latest on that i'm joined by senior justice correspondent evan perez. evan, explain what this relates to. >> reporter: well, anderson, michael sussman was a lawyer who worked with a law firm that represented hillary clinton's 2016 campaign, and he is charged now by john durham, the special counsel appointed under bill barr, he is charged with lying to the fbi in a meeting that occurred in september, september 19th of 2016. it is at that meeting that he turned over a thumb drive that contained information that allegedly showed some type of sure repetitious communications going on between computer servers at trump tower, trump organization, and a russian bank known as alpha bank. now, the fbi looked into this, investigated. it couldn't figure out really much about it and what the importance of that was, but all of that now has resulted in these charges against sussman. according to the special counsel john durham who we believe is wrapping up his investigation, this is something that was material enough that caused the fbi to dedicate resources to it, and

cnn's evan perez joins us now. evan, u.s.egitimately worried about domestic violent extremism from these groups that are praising the taliban? >> that's right, jake. look, i mean, it's worrying enough that john cohen who's a senior official over at the homeland security department had a call with law enforcement, state and local law enforcement, our geneva sands obtained details on that call. the messaging that you hear from white supremacist groups that are celebrating what the taliban have done. i'll cite one of the things they found on a proud boys telegram channel, for instance. there's discussion about if white men in the west had the same courage as the taliban, we would not be ruled by jews currently. again, these are the type of anti-semitic, anti-government sentiments that we know these groups thrive on. and they look at what the taliban were able to do with 80,000 or so men fighting against a much larger, much better equipped western military and thinking that they could do the same thing in the united states agains

evan perez, appreciate it. want to get some perspective now from our senior law enforcement analyst, andrew mccabe. former-deputy -- fbi deputy director. so, andrew, what does it say that i mean the durham probe which, i mean, according to evan, has lasted longer than the actual mueller probe, how serious are they? and what do you make of it? >> you know, anderson, look. let's -- let's -- let's frame this the way it really is, right? this is an investigation that was born of politics. um, former-attorney general barr, not satisfied with the half-dozen-or-so other entities that investigated why and how we opened the case we did to discover -- to uncover whether or not the trump campaign was colluding with russia. unhappy with the results of all those, handpicked john durham as his investigate squr they started over again. they traveled the globe together. they talked to every foreign intelligence agency. they talked to cia people, fbi people. and here we are with this indictment of an attorney who voluntarily br

cnn's senior justice correspondent evan perez is joining us with this exclusive reporting. are you looking. >> reporter: ana, these new subpoenas john durham has issued, grand jury subpoenas that have gone among a number of people at perkins coie, the law firm that represented hillary clinton he's 2016 campaign, and what it appears to show is that durham is still trying to investigate, trying to bring perhaps a broader case. if you remember earlier this month, he indicted a lawyer by the name of michael sussman, a lawyer with perkins coie who represented the clinton campaign and accused sussman of lying to the fbi in a 2016 meeting in which he presented -- sussman presented some information that appeared to show some computer traffic between donald trump's organization, the trump organization and alpha bank, a russian bank. according to durham this was done on behalf of the clinton campaign even though sussman allegedly did not represent himself as representing the clinton campaign. this is an investigation that's still ongoing. it appears to show that durham wants to bring

cnn's evan perez joins us now with what was on that call and what to make of this remarkable notion the taliban are somehow figures for some americans to admire. what is the department of homeland security saying about this? >> anderson, this was a call done with law enforcement from the state and local governments. and john cohen who's the top intelligence official at the homeland security department raised the concern that there was these domestic groups, white extremist, white supremacists and domestic extremist groups that are anti-government obviously who take some inspiration from what they believe the taliban was able to accomplish. a small group or much smaller group, less armed is able to defeat essentially a much better armed military in this case the united states. and so they believe that this is something that perhaps u.s. extremists could do here in this country. they could use the same model the taliban was able to use there here in this country to defeat the u.s. government. >> so what level of danger are law enforcement agencies actually expecting? i mean is this -- how

let's bring in evan perez. at are authorities monitoring ahead of this momentous anniversary? obviously they keep tabs on this every year. the 20th anniversary, they're keeping an eye on. >> right. certainly homeland security, the intelligence community, fbi are all looking at some of what they believe is an inspiration to come from the taliban takeover of afghanistan. for instance, al-qaeda, media associated with al-qaeda are putting out videos, including one that takes in some of the recent news events and highlights the idea of the u.s. decline. and one of them says that essentially that the january 6th event could be -- could be considered the fourth airplane. that's a reference to the fourth airplane that went down in pennsylvania. this is something they look for, as you pointed out, every year, jim. but the isis and al-qaeda media that homeland security keeps an eye on, certainly they believe this is something they could use to try to inspire people who are already here or in western countries to try to ca

i want to discuss with cnn's evan perez and elie honig, a former federal prosecutor. od to see both of you. evan, you're up first. an indictment tonight in this long-awaited robert durham investigation, but it's not what people were built up to anticipate -- well, what certain people were built up to anticipate. take us through the charges, please. >> look, there was a lot of hype over this investigation by john durham, who was appointed as special counsel by bill barr, you know, to look into the investigation, the trump/russia investigation. durham today filed charges against michael susman, who is a cybersecurity lawyer here in washington, who worked for perkins kouey. he's accused and charged with lying to the fbi at a meeting in september 2016 in which he handed over information that purported to show some kind of communications between a server belonging to the trump organization and a russian bank called alpha bank. now, according to durham, this was a key lie, a material lie that is worth bringing this charge of making a false statement because he says that susm

cnn's senior justice correspondent evan perez is here with us.id we learn about violent crime in the u.s. >> alisyn, violent crime overall is up according to these fbi statistics that go back, again, to 2020. compared to 2019. violent crime in general is up 5%, and as you mentioned, murder, homicides are up nearly 30% compared to 2019. in total, 21,500 murders were recorded according to the fbi, and look, the overall picture is that crime overall is down. there's a lot of hand ringing by people in the biden administration and congress as well as local governments as to exactly what is going on here. if you look at the overall picture, i think we have some statistics that shows a wider picture over the years. the numbers, however, are still down compared to the 1990s. if you remember those years when murder in places like washington, d.c., and new york were way way higher than they are right now. >> yeah, i remember those years vividly but i don't want to go back to them. did the report give any reason for the spike? i mean, what's going on? >> on

joining me now is cnn justice correspondent evan perez and cnn legal analyst, asia rengasa this is obviouslyoigtening. one official warning domestic extremists are framing the taliban as a model for people who want a civil war here in the u.s. how serious are officials taking this threat? >> it's serious enough that john cohen held this call with local and state law enforcement in which he outlines some of these things that dhs has been monitoring including groups that we know have been talking about trying to foment a civil war. essentially looking at what the taliban did and saying, well, if those guys could essentially drive out a much better armed u.s. military presence in their country, why can't people here, you know, white supremacist groups and others who have similar aims to topple the u.s. government, why can't they try that here and drawing inspiration from this, you know, and so that's one of the reasons why you see officials trying to share this information so law enforcement knows what to look for. >> you know, evan, there's also a big wave of anti-refugee rhetoric and a lot of

. >> cnn's correspondent evan perez joining us now.w about what is ultimately going to happen here? >> well one of the things that the victims testified yesterday want is for some measure of justice to be brought to the fbi, the agents who took the initial report back in 2015 and sat on it, did nothing for more than a year. during which time, according to the inspector general report that we saw testimony about yesterday, during which time 70 additional girls were abused by larry nassar. that is part of the failure here that happened at the fbi for which christopher wray, the current fbi director, he was not in that office when this occurred. but he apologized personally to the victims yesterday in his senate testimony. the big question that loomed over all of this, is why are those agents who handled this and lied about it and how they lied about what they did and didn't do, why aren't they facing consequences like prosecution. this is something that the justice department will do for a lot of other cases. so the big question that was
