i want to begin with cnn senior justice correspondent evan perez, who is here with me. evan, you've been reporting this out throughout the course of the last several hours. it has been several hours since we've gotten an official update from local officials. what more do we know about the suspect and the investigation right now? well, at this point, phil, there's still a lot more work for the the fbi investigators to do, but they already know a couple of things. >> obviously, they know the suspect is dead. they've been able to get a little bit of his background, and we know that he is a u.s. citizen, that the vehicle that was involved there, you see, in some of the pictures. a ford pickup truck that the investigators believe was rented from an app that allows private citizens to rent out their vehicles. i mean, one of the things we did today was obviously trace to try to find the owner of that vehicle and that person, you know, seems to be alive. so clearly not the person who was behind the wheel of this truck that struck all of these people in the early morning hours th

evan perez was able to confirm that.ut they were doing an abundance of caution from what i was getting from one of my sources to make sure they had the suspect that they were looking for. so there's a lot of evidence that they're going to obviously have to go through. they're going to have to take pictures of that truck and then go try to figure out, where did this truck come from? did the person plan to be there? was this, you know, this is such a big event. and when you think about new year's eve as a person who's been down there before, there's hundreds of people who lined those streets all the time. and then you add the fact that you have two of the biggest college football programs down there for the sugar bowl. you can just only imagine the amount of people that could have been down there. but this, of course, happened around 315. the drones were also deployed last night from the new orleans police department. that's something. so i'm wondering, were they able to follow this truck, especially after the shots were f

evan perez is out front. lling evan that the charges could have been brought a whole year earlier. now, that is a wow moment. that is something that could have changed where trump is standing tonight, what happened today and in fact the entire arc of american history. >> the incoming president is not -- >> first that breaking news on a possible pardon tonight. what more are you learning about request by former proud boys leader enrique tarrio for a full pardon from trump? >> erin, the incoming president is not really saying exactly how he's going to go forward with these pardons. but enrique tarrio is one of the ones that i think would get a lot of pushback from people like lindsey graham, people in the -- in the president's circle who support law enforcement. remember, enrique tarrio had one of the longest sentences, 22 years for seditious conspiracy. he's one of over 1,500 people who've been charged with crimes related to january 6th. you know that over 600 of those were charged with assaulting police office

let's go to cnn's evan perez. evan, what happens next?>> well, casey, this report about about 20 pages really outlines the reason why prosecutor david weiss conducted this investigation. this is a six year investigation, which, as you remember, hunter biden has pleaded, pleaded guilty to tax charges. earlier this year, he also was found guilty by a jury in delaware to gun related charges. and right before he was sentenced, president biden gave him an unconditional pardon. and i'll read you just a part of what david weiss writes here. he defends his prosecution. he says, i prosecuted the two cases against mr. biden because he broke the law, and then he takes a part of his report to essentially respond to joe biden, the president who accused the justice department of selectively prosecuting his son. and he says, no, no, no, no one, no other president has solely has has made these accusations against the justice department for the part of a prosecution such as this one. casey. >> all right. evan perez for us tonight. evan, thanks very much f

i want to get some more now on the federal investigation from cnn's evan perez. evan, authorities have released a photo of the man identified as the driver of th crowd in new orleans, killed 15 people and injured dozens of others. >> that's right, wolf, and that photograph is being put out there by the fbi in part to public. they have asked. they've set up a website, fbi.gov, slash bourbon street attack. they are asking the public to send in any information, any videos, anything about where this suspect may have been over the last several days, over the last several weeks, as they were developing this plot. and we also know, obviously, as we've reported previously, that he was an army veteran. he served in the u.s. army from 2007 to 2020, both in active duty and in reserve status. he actually deployed to afghanistan in 2009. for about a year into early 2010. and, you know, again, part of the picture, as john was just describing, you know, is coming into into focus now for the investigators, a lot of his, his problems and whatever might have been his motivation to

i want to turn now to cnn senior justice correspondent evan perez. evan, you've been breaking news on this throughout the course of the day. you're getting new information about the fbi's investigation into whether the suspect had help. what are you learning? >> well, the key question, obviously, is the help. the additional associates that the fbi assistant special agent in charge was mentioning. and what we know at this point, phil, is that they have the fbi has recovered video, surveillance video that appears to show three, three men and one woman appearing to help put ieds. what are believed to be ieds, at locations in the french quarter. now, we heard from the fbi there that there were additional potential explosives that were found during a search later this morning, and they were rendered safe during the day today. and so the surveillance video appears to show those people either helping to put those devices there or being close by. again, that's part of this investigation. now to to find those people, to ask them whether they were involved in s

evan perez, cnn, washington. >> let's go to cnn's kyung lah now, who has details on what we know abouthe suspect. >> the suspect behind the terror attack in new orleans up until several years ago appeared to be quite normal. an army veteran who went to college and worked in real estate, and it had started to have some financial troubles. he posted a youtube video, though, as recently as four years ago, where he described that he had been born in texas, that he was trying to get this real estate company off the ground. he identified himself as a veteran. we want to play you a short clip of this. even though this video has been taken down, because it gives you a window into the background of this suspect. >> so i'm born and raised in beaumont, texas and now live in houston, and i've been here all my life, with the exception of traveling for the military, where i spent ten years as a human resources specialist. >> you're looking at a picture from the u.s. army. it comes from a 2013 u.s. army facebook post that identified him as an army staff sergeant, working as an information technology

cnn's evan perez reports.ey're also trying to track down if they're trying to track down any possible accomplices. >> the fbi is working to determine whether anyone else was involved in the attack that killed at least 15 people early on new year's day on bourbon street in new orleans. an army veteran from texas maneuvered a rented pickup truck around a police car that was intended to block access to the street. the attack injured dozens of people, and the fbi is treating it as a terrorism investigation. investigators found an i.s.i.s. flag, as well as writings with the suspect. shamsud-din jabbar. this evidence, along with recordings he is believed to have made recently indicated allegiance to i.s.i.s.. according to investigators. authorities also detonated several suspected improvised explosives in the truck and nearby. investigators spent the day at the large crime scene in the french quarter, as well as working to conduct searches at other locations associated with the suspect. this includes a rental home n

our evan perez is joining us by phone. evan, what more can you tell us about this?> well, fred, we had anticipated that jack smith would be leaving soon. >> obviously, he was going to. he had previously said he was going to leave before the president elect takes office on january 20th. >> and we knew the office was winding down, shutting down essentially. >> so this notice that he resigned, effective yesterday, came as a footnote in this filing that the justice department put in to the federal court in fort pierce, the one who judge cannon aileen cannon, who has been seeing the overseeing the classified documents investigation. and so she has a three day hold right now prohibiting the department from releasing the jack smith report on this two. investigations. that hole, by the way, jessica is expiring tomorrow or monday morning, depending on when you count the the days right from the day that she issued it. so we're waiting to see whether either she or the appeals court in atlanta rules again in the sometime between tomorrow or monday. that allows the justice depar

have cnn chief legal affairs correspondent paula reid, along with senior justice correspondent evan perez. tell us about who they're saying did this, evan. >> well, now we have an identity from the fbi. 42 year old. shamsud din jabbar, a u.s. citizen from texas. according to the fbi. and this all happened at about 315 local time, central time in in new orleans, there on bourbon street. now, one of the things we also learning from this new updated information from the fbi, they've confirmed earlier reporting that there was an i.s.i.s. flag that was found in the vehicle. and the fbi is obviously trying to determine, brianna, at this hour, what associations had this person been talking to? anybody associated with i.s.i.s.? how far back that that radicalization may have may have started? the other thing that is that is important here is that there were an ied that was found in the vehicle in a in an ice chest inside the vehicle. but we also know that they are trying to to disarm or render safe additional ieds that were found elsewhere in the french quarter. again, that's new information that

i want to bring in evan perez. also with us is cnn's tom foreman. evan, what are you learning? >> well, one of the things we know right now is that the pentagon is going to have to explain a little bit about this, because we're told that this person, the suspect, brianna, is a former member of the u.s. military. we've asked we've reached out to the to the to the military, to the pentagon for some more details about their service. but that is also adding to the complex picture of this, of this suspect. we know that the fact that there was an i.s.i.s. flag obviously leads the fbi to believe that there was some kind of radicalization that happened. and so that's perhaps one of the questions that will be addressed here by the law enforcement that is there. obviously, the fact that there were multiple locations where there were additional explosives, who put them? there was this person acting alone or did they did they put them there themselves, or did they have additional help from someone who placed those explosives? what was the overall larger plan here? it's clear that the vehic

. >> let's bring in cnn's evan perez, also our senior legal analyst, elie honig, and cnn's alayna treene somehow got the west palm beach assignment in this. i don't know how that happened. evan, you helped break this story. why is there such a backlog? backlog now? >> well, part of the problem, jake, is that the the incoming trump transition waited until december, a month after the election, before they signed these agreements, these memorandums of understanding, which allowed and paved the way for the fbi to begin doing background checks on their nominees. and so what you have is this real time crunch. you have dozens of agents around the country who are working overtime to try to get these things. they have 14 days to complete these, these, these background checks. in some cases, the republican senate is putting the on the calendar. they're putting hearings on the calendar before the fbi even gets these sf 86, the form that everybody has to fill out, which provides all of the detail, your background, biographical detail, you know, which is key for what the fbi has to do to investigate

evan perez, cnn, washington. >> we now want to bring in sean keenan.s a freelance journalist for the new york times who interviewed the suspect for his college newspaper in 2015. i want to thank you for joining us. and can you just let us in on what the circumstances were? i know this was nearly a decade ago now, but you didn't meet him. what were you interviewing him about and what was he like? >> yeah. >> um, thank you for having me, paula. >> uh, i mean, this began like any other story, which was just, you know, somebody whispers in my ear, i'm having difficulty navigating, you know, whatever government system of maybe in this case, it was students reaching out saying, we're having trouble getting our veterans affairs benefits that we are owed through the gi bill. and admittedly, you know, ten years later, i don't fully remember how i got connected to shamsud-din jabbar. i believe it may have been through the georgia state's student government association. um, but we just discussed what it was like for him acclimating to civilian life and to college

our evan perez was able to confirm that suspect is dead. i've been talking to some local folks on the ground there who have been telling me this is an evolving situation. in fact, right now there is a perimeter set up around that suspect's truck. so they're trying to figure out exactly where he came from. but it was around 315 this morning where police say that this suspect took an f-150 and started trying to intentionally hit people who were out there. we know ten people are dead, more than 30 injured. and as you can imagine, we do have some new video in to cnn that is very tough to look at. we have blurred some of the images here, but you can see some of the carnage that was left behind. obviously, some of this video is spreading over the internet with bodies laying out there, and you can just feel for the people who were involved in this at some point. that suspect did then start shooting at officers. two officers were shot. we're told they are in stable condition. outside of that, now we start building from the investigative points, jus

i want to go right now to cnn senior justice correspondent evan perez with what we know at this very minute. okay. we knew it was coming. evan, apparently, it's gone to congress. why has that been the first stop and at that time, the fire started around over there around 6:00. >> so i went outside and i began filming this fire. my mother was actually watching the fire from her home, but there was no adam. actually, there was not even a fire in altadena. so about 9:00 my time that judge aileen cannon had put in place that prevented the release of any part of this report. >> so what we have here is volume one, which has to do with the investigation of donald trump's effort to overturn the results of the 2016 to 2020 election and and that was the case that judge chutkan handled in washington, dc. that is correct. has nothing to do with judge cannon, but somehow she had asserted to put on hold all of the report she her her whole lifted. as you know, the trump team had tried at the last minute minute to ask one more time and she rejected that. i'll read you just a part of what jack smith,

now here in the studio with much more on these investigations, cnn senior justice correspondent evan perez and former fbi deputy director andrew mccabe, who's also cnn's law enforcement analyst. evan, i want to start with you, because on some level, i appreciate the transparency that we heard there in the sense of how this actually works, because when you think through the fact that this press conference was happening about 35, 33 hours after the attack, i was watching the evolution of this investigation through you because you were reporting it out in real time. and how much work and progress has gone into this to get to this point. lay out what's happened over the course of many hours. yeah. >> and i think yesterday there was a lot of chaos going on. >> and it is new orleans is an unusual political atmosphere there at all times. and so that is part of the factor that happened yesterday. and one of the things that happened was they had the surveillance video which showed people dragging coolers into locations that made them believe that there could have been other devices inside those. >>

evan perez is outfront in washington. you've been covering this. he he called it a coincidence. evan, at the very least, that both cars used in these events, these attacks were from turo. but officials are trying to see if there's anything more than just a coincidence here. >> right, exactly. pamela, they are trying to determine whether perhaps one was inspired by the other. again, there's a lot of coincidence here, including the fact that both of these vehicles were rented from this app, turo, which allows people to to take their private cars and rent them out to, to other people. and so that's obviously one of the big coincidences, obviously, that both events happening on the same day. again, that's one of the reasons why you heard from president biden that the fbi is is going to investigate both incidents, to see whether there's any possible connections. now, we don't know that at this point, they appear to be just complete coincidences. but in the case of new orleans, look, we know from talking to law enforcement sources, some of the reporting that you've done as well today,

because of how slow the justice department was under him in prosecuting trump for january 6th and evan perez is reporting tonight that within the justice department, a source is telling him that the justice department quote wasted time. other former justice officials telling evan that the charges could have been brought a whole year earlier. now, that is a wow moment. that is something that could of changed where trump standing tonight. what happened today and in fact, the entire arc of american history. we go out to evan, i have to talk about your breaking reporting here, exclusively. first the breaking news on a possible pardon tonight. what more are you learning about this request by former proud boy's leader for a full pardon from trump? >> reporter: erin, the in-coming president is not saying exactly how he is going forward with the pardons. enrakeo tarreo would get a lot of push back from people like lindsey graham, in the president's circle who support law enforcement. remember, he had one of the longest sentences, a 22 years. he is one of over 1500 people charged with crimes related

one former doj official telling evan perez they wasted time, they were not strategic. it was a year of nothing. now, of course, you got this filing saying that he will be too hasty. trying to release the information. who is right? >> the allegation that merrick garland is a partisan bent on politicalization or weaponization of the department it is ludicrous. he is some of his own internal doj lawyers said, arguably resistant to pursue this case in the first place given its political nature. garland is a cautious, by the book lawyer. since here, the book, the federal statue which authorizes special counsel calls for a report, i don't see him varying from that clear standard of law. >> don't forget he was an appellate judge, an eye towards those issues they are trying to raise and contemplated at least that. >> that is right >> tim, thank you and stand by. we will talk about pardon news and your new book later in the show. as well as i want to bring in jeremy, a manhattan prosecutor and criminal defense attorney as well. jeremy, look, trump does not want it out. he wants

let's get to cnn's evan perez. he's got more on this exclusive report. tell us what you've learned. >> kate, what critics would call the last year inside the justice department, they say that it was something they had to do. they had to spend a lot of time looking into every single possible corner to see whether there was more ed to tie donald trump to the violence we saw that day. one of the things they did find, there was this tip that developed in about june of 2021 that seemed to indicate that there was some kind of meeting between trump or someone very close to him and members of the proud boys. these are the people behind some of the worst violence on january 6th. they spent months looking into that. they looked into the infamous willard room where people were trying to help overturn the election results. they also looked into possible financial ties. all of that took about a year. so when you heard from attorney general merrick garland about a year later, on the anniversary of the attack, here are the words he said that gave people hope about what

cnn's senior justice correspondent, evan perez is with us now. so what kind of questions is she likely to face? evan well, the the closeness to donald trump is probably going to be a lot of the focus, especially from democrats. >> i mean, they obviously know that she was involved in defending him in one of his impeachments. she was very, very much involved in some of the efforts that he made to try to overturn election results back in back in 2020. and so the the focus for democrats is to try to figure out how to tie pam bondi closely to donald trump and raise questions as to whether or not she will ever say no to him. and so that's part of the work that you will see from from democrats. look, i think, as manu pointed out, the republicans have the majority here. they know that unless something goes terribly wrong at this hearing, that she is very likely to be the next attorney general. and one of the interesting things, john, that, you know, going into into the beginning of this, of this administration, there's a lot of things that will be on her

joining me now on the phone, cnn senior justice correspondent evan perez.n, you listened to a lot of that press conference, but also through your sourcing, you've heard other information. what can you add to this? >> to learn more about this, trying to figure out more about his his travel, his, uh, you know, what was he doing in egypt? >> who did he meet with there over the days that he spent there? >> um, there's a mention. they mentioned a trip to ontario. >> um, and also a trip to tampa. um, was was he considering attacks in atlanta or tampa before? finally deciding on new orleans? those are obviously still big parts of this question. um, what we also learned, though, you know, i think a significant thing here is that, you know, apparently he just wasn't very good at building these bombs because they would have been obviously, they would have been a lot worse of an attack if he had had the detonators that could have set this off. and and those are the things that i think everybody is wondering, quite striking. >> evan, that there was such meticulous plan

we have evan perez joining us now with the latest on both of these investigations. van, what are you learning? >> well, brianna, you know, these were the obvious. the obvious coincidences of these two attacks, which happened on new year's day. obviously, the two subjects involved both renting vehicles from this app called turo, where people can rent their private cars to to other people. and also the fact that both subjects are believed to have connections to the u.s. military. now, in the case of the cybertruck incident there at trump tower, authorities are still not sure what this is. if it's just a person who set off this this firework inside that cybertruck, whether there was any links to terrorism. obviously, that's a that's a that's a major part of this because of the location. it happened right there at the entrance. you can see there in the video right outside the entrance to the trump tower hotel in las vegas. and then in the case of new orleans, the fbi very quickly arrived at the idea that this would be a terrorism investigation. they found an i.s.i.s. fla

we have cnn senior justice correspondent evan perez with us now. we also have former fbi agent breanna fox, along with retired nypd detective and adjunct professor at the john jay college of criminal justice. michael alcazar. evan, first to you, because we're also learning that this 42 year old shamsud-din jabbar is an army veteran who was honorably discharged. >> right. and part of the big question now for the fbi, not only finding any associates, but trying to track when this person may have been radicalized. if this person was indeed had allegiance to i.s.i.s., how far back did that go? and did anyone know this? was this something that was visible, perhaps when they were still in the u.s. military? and of course, those are big questions that the pentagon is going to be working with the fbi to figure out. big question, though, at this hour, is they we know that they're doing some conducting, some searches of other locations. they are talking to and trying to find people who were associated with the suspect. we don't know how many other people they

cnn's evan perez is joining us right now getting new information.you're getting some clarification from law enforcement officials. what are you learning? >> yeah. well, for one of the things we we have been focused on is the fbi certainly was looking at this surveillance video that at the time at least appeared to show that there were other people who may have been involved in placing the devices in the french quarter. now, we know that law enforcement now has determined that those people had nothing to do with this incident. at this point, it appears that those people were seen on surveillance video, did not have anything to do with placing devices in the french quarter that this suspect, you know, was solely responsible, certainly for the attack, at least as we know it at this point. now, we should make clear that the fbi is still looking at possible associates there, trying to see whether there's anybody who may have been involved in helping to create the devices, the ieds, whether those people, anybody who might have been involved in helping to

and let's talk more now with cnn senior justice correspondent evan perez on this fbi investigation. what are officials looking for at this stage, at this stage now, they now that they believe this is a lone wolf, this is an attacker who was working alone. >> and as you can see, as what anderson was just describing and what the fbi says was simply radicalizing on his own and was in his last few days, i guess, making known what what his intent was. now they're going to try to put together a more complete picture of exactly how this happened. obviously, there's a lot of things for the fbi to unpack. there's a lot of vulnerabilities that this attack has kind of exposed. you know, one of the things that that that the fbi and law enforcement really struggle with is how to stop lone wolf attackers, because if you don't really talk to anybody, if you don't tell anyone what you're about to do, if you don't reach out to i.s.i.s. coordinators on telegram, you know, they have no idea what you're about to do. and if nobody around you sees some kind of change or reports it, it's really difficult

. >> and we're here now with cnn's evan perez and former boston police commissioner ed davis coming out of this press conference where officials in las vegas are updating us on the cybertruck explosion that happened outside of the trump international hotel yesterday. let's just go through, really, i think the big headlines, which are the identification of the individual, they still have to do medical records. they still have to do dna. that's very clear. but they have a lot of evidence indicating that this is an active duty green beret. so an elite special forces soldier currently serving in the u.s. military. but, evan, i know something that stood out to you was, look, this was quite a scene. there's questions about what kind of message is someone sending when they blow up a cybertruck in front of a trump hotel, and they're trying to figure out things about the motive here. >> right. and the fact that nothing has been readily available to the fbi, nothing is readily visible. you know, obviously, we compare it to the new orleans attacker. you know, that person plainly made clear what th
