evan perez, cnn, washington. >> all right, evan perez, thank you. joining us now, the hill congressional reporter michael schnell. michael, good to see you. let's first talk about this attempt at expanding this purge of career law enforcement officials. i mean, it's an extraordinary move. period. and we know that the due date for this list of names is due out on tuesday. talk to us about the reaction that you've been seeing and also the impact that it could have on the workforce. i mean, we're talking about potentially thousands of people losing their jobs. >> yeah, this. >> seems to be a. >> really large scope of individuals that are being looked at. there were a lot of people who worked on the january 6th investigations. let's remember it wasn't just the investigation into president trump's actions surrounding that day and in the lead up to that day. but it also involved the thousands of protesters who stormed the building, those of whom were, of course, prosecuted a lot, put in jail. and then that pardon came later on. so it seems like this could

let's bring in senior justice correspondent evan perez. evan, this is a lot for the senior members of the fbi to think about and to consider. they have been told that they have to hand over those names. what are you learning about what might happen today at noon well, sarah. >> these these names are really. >> going to be coming in at noon. we expect that the leadership of the fbi is is going to comply. but really, the pushback is very real. inside the fbi, we're talking about roughly half of agents, right. maybe seven, 8000 who worked on january 6th related investigations. this was the largest investigation in the justice department's history. and that's the reason why people are so concerned. and, you know, this all began with a memo that went on friday. i have it right here that went out from emil bove. who is the the acting deputy attorney general and the subject line is terminations, and he's asking for the names of everyone, former and current agents and analysts who worked on january 6th related cases, as well as a hamas related case

cnn senior justice correspondent evan perez joins us now. evan, what are you hearing about what is going on at fbi now that this deadline has come and gone? >> well, the deadline was noon. so as of an hour ago, our understanding was that the fbi leadership was going to comply with the demand for these names to be provided. and so this lawsuit really is about what happens next, which is that the the the agents are demanding that the justice department not publish their names, because what we've seen before, doris, is that, you know, the publication of the of the names of agents who are involved in any trump related cases results in harassment, in threats to those to their families. they get doxed. and so that's one of the first things that is being addressed here in this lawsuit. obviously, the larger question is whether these agents will be targeted for termination or demotion or any other kinds of punishment. right. that is partly what is at issue here. you remember on friday, the the justice department was headed towards doing dozens of pot

cnn senior justice correspondent evan perez joins us now. this memo also appears aimed at calming fears of a mass firing, but it doesn't seem to be having that intended effect. >> it's kind of hitting in the opposite direction. now, this is a memo from emil bove who is the acting deputy attorney general of the justice department right now. and he was trying to essentially tell fbi employees that i've been asking for a smaller group of of fbi agents. i've been trying to identify who worked on these january 6th cases. and your bosses have essentially been disobeying my orders. so that's the reason why i sent this memo last week, which implicates thousands of fbi employees who worked on january 6th cases. i'll read you a part of what he says to try to again assuage these fears, that this is going to be a prelude to a mass firing. i'll show you part of this memo on screen. it says no fbi employee who simply followed orders and carried out their duties in an ethical manner with respect to january 6th investigations, is at risk of termination or ot

cnn's evan perez is on the scene for us. he's got details. i understand the new attorney general, pam bondi, just held her first news conference over where you are. what can you tell us about the lawsuit she announced against the state of new york? >> that's right. wolf. >> this was. >> this is part of. >> a new aggressive. >> push by. >> this justice department going after jurisdictions, cities and states that have so-called sanctuary laws. these are laws that prohibit local authorities from cooperating with federal immigration authorities. and of course, immigration being a huge part of the trump administration's agenda. this this time around, here's the attorney general describing this lawsuit, which we have not yet seen. >> but it. >> appears to go after new york for. >> various laws. >> various sanctuary laws that it says that, she says, prohibit their cooperation with the feds. listen. >> if you don't comply with. federal law, we will hold you accountable. we did it to an illinois. strike one. strike two is new york. and if you are a sta

joining us now for more on this is cnn senior justice correspondent evan perez. so, evan, what do we know about the people leading this review? >> well, one of the key people is, is emil bove. he is a former attorney or lawyer in prosecutor in the southern district for the southern district of new york. and he's the one who has been sending these memos to the fbi, trying to get these 5000 names of agents and analysts who worked on the on the trump cases. and, you know, talking to some of his former colleagues, you know, they're a bit surprised of his role in this because they remember, after january 6th, 2021, he was one of the people who was pushing agents and prosecutors to do some of these cases. he was there helping to design the legal process for the fbi to do search warrants and so on. so the idea that he is now helping to lead a review that will essentially look at work that he was involved in, is does raise the question of at least an appearance of conflict. and, you know, it goes beyond emil bove, of course, pamela brown pamela bondi pamela brown. >> don'

let's bring in evan perez. so president trump's department of justice on day one, pam bondi we should note she was just started yesterday, asked for the fbi to disband this team that combats foreign interference in our elections. right? >> right. yeah. and this is part of a number of of of orders that she signed in her first day, a very, very busy first day. and this is one of them that has to do with national security. now, look, i think, you know, disbanding this task force doesn't mean that the fbi is not going to be doing these investigations. but we do know that the new president, the new president has always been a little bit annoyed at this idea that foreign interference in the elections may have helped him in his 2016 election. it's an irritant in the in the trump relationship. so getting rid of this is probably one way to curry favor with the president. it doesn't mean, however, that they're not going to be doing these types of investigations. if you notice other things, one of the things that bondi al

evan perez, thanks very much. now, the future of ukraine and who decides it, which seems to be in question this afternoon. the president said he spoke at length today with russia's vladimir putin about ending the war, which was begun, you'll remember, with an act of russian aggression, he said. the two will have several summits, with the first likely to be in saudi arabia and on social media said that both countries plan to, quote, have our respective teams start negotiations immediately, adding, quote, we will begin by calling president zelenskyy of ukraine to inform him of the conversation. what he did not say, either in that posting or later on camera, is just how ukraine would factor into these talks, which again, are about its fate and future. here he is in the oval office being asked directly about it. >> do you view ukraine as an equal member of this peace process? >> um. >> it's an interesting question. i think they have to make peace. their people are being killed and i think they have to make peace. >> i

i want to go to cnn's evan perez right now. evan, the fbi has been told to hand over the names and the details involving any fbi employee, agent, official, et cetera, having anything to do with any of the january 6th prosecutions. is the fbi complying with that order, with the deadline? and what might happen to the employees if they worked on january 6th related cases? >> well, that is still to be determined, jake. but the fbi did comply with the letter of what the justice department ordered them to do, which is to provide the information on, in this case, about more than 5000 employees, agents, analysts, people, staff, anybody who worked on january 6th related cases. there's also a case relating to the prosecution of hamas leaders and what the fbi did is they didn't provide the names. exactly. what they did was they provided the unique employee employee identifier. and essentially, if people at the justice department want those names, they're going to have to go over to the justice, to the fbi headquarters and try to look up th

cnn senior justice correspondent evan perez is in washington, in the newsroom in new york. cnn chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst john miller is here, who also was a former fbi assistant director. evan, i want to start with you. what are you hearing about? first of all, the questionnaire. and second of all, who's on the list? >> well, the questionnaire. >> was due yesterday afternoon at 3 p.m. all indications are that the agents complied with what was required of them, which was to provide information about what they did, what what actions they took, what cases they were working on. it was a very tight deadline that they were ordered to do from from an email over the weekend. and then today was a deadline for the the acting leadership of the fbi to turn over the names of thousands of employees, agents, analysts, supervisors who worked on cases related to january 6th, as well as a hamas related prosecution that also occurred in in in the last administration. now, all indications were this morning was that the fbi leaders were going to comply with that deadline of

cnn's katelyn polantz and evan perez are here with their new reporting. caitlin, how is the trump administration responding to these court orders? >> well, they're fighting and they're trying to appeal as fast as possible. but trump is complaining about judges coming in and essentially putting on pause things that the trump administration has done on many, many different fronts, policy fronts, his reductions to the federal workforce, his efforts to curtail funding. and the judges are saying, let's keep the status quo and just make sure that what the administration is doing here is legal. we don't know yet what the courts will ultimately decide. these are the things that could maybe even go to the supreme court. but one area, boris, that is really a third rail that has evolved in the last two days is judges piping up around health care. there was a nationwide injunction last night right before midnight, where a judge said, you can't cut federal funding to all of the research and academic groups and health care health system administrations across the count
