evans in tonight for brian. >> i'm shawn yancy. investigators say he potentially put the lives of covert officers at risk. fox 5's will thomas is working this story for us tonight. >> as you can imagine, these are very serious charges for the ex-cia intel officer and father of three. if convicted, john kiriakou could face up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine. the government believes he leaked classified secrets about fellow covert officers to members of the media. john kiriakou appeared in federal court in alexandria monday afternoon. the 47-year-old who lives here at arlington with his wife and three young children is up against the justice department now. kiriakou is accused of leaking the name of a covert cia officer to the new york times and of other media outlets and identified him as taking part in the interrogation of al- qaeda financier abu 0 bayda. he was of special interest -- 0 bayda. he was of -- zubaydah to journalists because zubaydah was supposed to have been waterboarded several times. the charges also say kiriakou leaked the identity of another officer who participated in zubaydah's interrogation.
