indeed the entire detention of evan gershovich, the u.s. has said this is politically motivated and diplomats have long speculated that perhaps it was russia's intention to make a number of arrests of the u.s. citizens to shore up people that they could then exchange for the assets that they wanted. so all of this will depend on politics and it goes without saying that there is absolutely no goodwill between the two countries even though despite heavy deteriorations in the relationship after russia's invasion of ukraine, a prisoner swap was possible at the end of 2022. so in terms of timing, we would want to hear something around the end of january and it can take up to a year, a year and a half to get a verdict. but these things are very unpredictable especially with such a notable individual, somebody who is the highest priority for the u.s., return of him and paul whelan, they have said that. russia knows that there is a lot of leverage here and they will be wanting some of their most highly prized individuals back in return. >> all righ

cnn's evan perez was right there listening to hunter biden and let's start with him, evan. that is more than what we've heard to date from hunter on this subject. >> absolutely, john. look, it was an extraordinary thing to come to the steps here on the senate side of the capitol, and not on the house side where the house republicans have been waiting for him at 9:30 to do the closed-door testimony. here he spoke more forcefully and confrontationally really about these allegations that republicans have been making. a lot of this stuff has been done on paper and by republican members of congress who are essentially twisting some of the things that huntser says were in some of the evidence that they've obtained and some of the documents they've obtained and here he confronts a lot of that saying that they were mocking his addiction, his struggles with addiction. his -- problems he had with his finances and also trying to use this, really, to try to take down his father. he said the same committee chairmen have engaged in political interference in what has already been a five-y

evan, i want to start with you with the hunter biden situation. you heard in the last block we were talking about the indictment, how lengthy it is, and the fact that we do hear hunter biden's legal team saying it's a big indictment but, like, nothing has changed with regard to either the charges or the tax law that he is alleged to have broken. the only thing that's different is that the plea deal went away and now there's a special counsel. what are you hearing from your sources? >> well, look, dana, this is a big legal problem for hunter biden. the justice department says that he could face up to 17 years in prison. no one really thinks that that's what is going to happen here. but that's what the general guidelines are. but, you know, the critics are right, that the facts really haven't changed. they haven't changed since we first broke the story back in december of 2020 that this investigation was ongoing and that it was a real thing, that it was a real problem. so one of the questions at the justice department i think is going to struggle to

cnn's evan perez and manu raju. first to you, evan. you were right there to hear hunter biden's statement. >> that's right, john. look, the goal today by hunter biden's team was to keep the republicans guessing, and he did right up to the moment he walked up these steps here to deliver that very forceful, that very defiant statement that you heard just a part of just now really answering for the first time in -- in the best way he could some of the questions that republicans have been throwing his way. it is essentially the statement that he was probably going to be able to read to republicans if he had sat for that closed-door deposition. instead, he said he preferred to do a public hearing and so he showed up here on the senate side. the republicans were sitting over on the house side. he showed up here at what is called the senate swamp to deliver that statement. a lot of it is very, very personal talking about his personal struggles with addiction and also defending his father, defending the fact that he says that there is no evide
