our inpatient pediatric unit is at evanston hospital.ther patient that was transferred to comer children's home after getting some emergency surgery. i would also like to add that our nursing staff was phenomenal. the gentleman that stands behind me here and ladies that stand behind me here provided amazing emergency surgical and orthopedic care. with me are the doctors that help run our trauma surgery program. the response that they made, the time in which they arrived to help support and take care of these patients is phenomenal. >> you were off site when the initial call came in? >> yes, sir. >> tell me what happened. >> i got a text message that there had been a massing shooting in highland park and could i call highland park hospital, which i did. i talked to the chief of surgery there, john lynn, who was out of town but got the first call. when i heard there was a mass shooting -- >> trace: the president of the united states is addressing the chicago shooting. let's watch. >> today we mark the 246th anniversary of our independence

five people were actually brought to evanston, their sister hospital, which is a trauma 1 level center, so 31 total people injured in this. and i'm being told many of those, quote, the vast majority of those, are gunshot wound victims. the other injuries that they're seeing right now, i'm being told, is people who were sort of fleeing the chaos, as you can see. you heard that woman just so well describe the chaos that ensued and confusion when these gunshots rang out. we've been hearing so much from people like her, like zoe, who were sheltering in place as the city said to do after this was happening, and they are saying now, because it's an active shooter -- or active situation, they have not found the suspect. we spoke to someone who was about a block off of the parade route and 20 people were so were sheltering in a bp. like you heard zoe say, she was at a sporting goods store. those people not leaving. they're scared to. we heard law enforcement say they've got the s.w.a.t. team going door to door as they work to try and find this suspect. i want you to hear, though, from another

there's the north shore sister hospital in evanston, which is trauma one. was transported there, probably nor critical care was needed for that patients and then there is a third hospital where we learned from the fire department people were transported as well. but certainly this gives us a clearer picture of the moment after and sometimes you have seen the chaos that happened after this shooting started. they were still in the middle of this parade, people just left behind everything. i think sometimes the concern is are some of the, did they give an update on whether this was part of it or are most of these gunshot victims. >> most of it appear that there was grunshot wound victims. we were told it was a vast majority gun showed it sounds like some were treated and were able to actually go home. but there are other injuries that we learned about, just like you're describing, people in chaos and confusion getting trampled. i was watching somebody trying to get away and she's pregnant. >> we're going to go to president biden. >> we've always come out bette

you could be in evanston, deerfield to the western suburbs, even into indiana. what happens here in washington fairly typically is, immediately washington headquarters of some of these major agency like the fbi, atf, dea, will reach out to the resources in regions. the regional field office is in chicago. and use all the resources they have. what's also interesting about this particular circumstance, trace, i want to say as far back as maybe 4 p.m. eastern time, we're talking a couple hours now, we had a sense of what the suspect might look like, the approximate age of the suspect and so that really does speak to what you heard ted talking about here, this incredible collaboration between agencies, both federal, state and local, to try to get a sense of who this person might be and then ultimately clear people out. if you ever saw the film, "the fugitive" you know what it could be like if you have a parade going on in chicago and you're trying to find sort of that needle in a haystack. it is quite dramatic what happened. we heard the president mention chicago ve

i was born in evanston, not far from where you are right now. many americans, even if they've inform ben to highland park, they know highland park. they know that kind of town, that kind of fourth of july parade shattered yesterday by this alleged suspect. >> i wouldn't have thought twice about inviting my son, my granddaughter to come and watch the fourth of july parade at highland park. it is a great community. one of the safest in our state in our nation and what happened yesterday was the clash of two traditions. one wonderful tradition, a fourth of july parade and another horrible emerging tradition of mass shootings. and while this was going on in highland park, this horrible massacre, there were six people being shot on the south side of chicago. guns, 400 million firearms across america without adequate regulation and safety measures, really have led us to this point. >> and so senator, let's get into that a little bit. as you look at this shooting and the others that you've dealt with on a national scale in terms of trying to get legisl

we are from evanston, illinois. >> i live in birmingham, alabama now. in a relationship with my wife since 1997. >> particularly because we live in the south, in a state that is probably on that list of states that would like to take measures into its own hands if the supreme court allowed it, and also because we have children and it puts our family in a precarious position, i would say our reaction was one of worry. we are trying not to worry too much. we are trying to be hopeful, but it is now in the back of our minds that we need to have contingency plans in place. >> i don't know where that means to health care, but it worries me, that our family would be unrecognized in states. >> it's terrifying, right? there is a very real possibility that if abortion can be overturned, interracial marriage can be overturned. protection for us has been about planning our estates, making sure that we have guardianship laid out for our son. >> i always told the story, when i was still in school in tallahase, probably about 2008, 2009, we both had pneumonia. i got o
