we've fought against development in the everglades big cyprus this came bay and over the years have continued to do so as we do today. so i've been a member of tropical audubon society for over 30 years and found it just a great way as i move to miami to learn about our local region and the natural areas around here. so i encourage everyone to go to our website at tropical audubon.org and take a look at our events. we have field trips every weekend throughout the year bird trips mostly oft. to go see eagles because of course as birders. we do see eagles regularly and a few people really have recognized that florida has one of the largest concentrations of bald eagles and the united states we have over 1,500 nesting nesting pairs and audubon in general has a program called eagle watch and these are people that keep an eye on eagles nests and just monitor them for making sure that the eagles are safe as they grow and we actually have a nest right here in south florida. not far from where we sit right now. um, this pair of eagles is nested pretty regularly here and um last year, they nested with

this is about 40 minutes outside of the city of miami here at the everglades. a look behind me, you can see the smoke is getting pretty dark. it's been progressing all morning, and we can spot some hot spots along the way. 9 with the lack of rain in this area and the hot temperatures, this fire has taken over 1 the ,000 acre -- 12,000 acres of land here in the everglades. the good news is currently homes and businesses are not in danger, but communities on the east side of this fire might be seeing some ash in the air and also accumulating on some surfaces like their cars and the streets as well. now, we do have an aerial view of this fire that was taken just yesterday. the florida forest service says it started tuesday night with about 100 acres, growing to now the 12,000. rangers and fire fighters are working to keep it contained as it's part of a conservancy. they're not trying to put if it out, this process is part of an ecological cycle helping to renew the land. so far it's 60% contained. dave rosenbaum talked about the saw grass that keeps this fire goin
