. >> reporter: talk for example groupon.com. people sign up and they e-mail out different discounts and coupons for company. they have 15 million subscribers worldwide. san francisco-based company want to get in on the game. yelp.com is launching their owner mail deal of the week program for bay area subscribers to compete with groupon. it starts tomorrow. >> we looked at the model over the years. we want to test it. >> reporter: they are not the only once. open table.com started a dally deal pilot program where subscribers are e-mailed half off coupons in restaurants in boston and new york. bay area diners say they love e- mail promotions and use them often. >> usually you save up to 50% off. there is no catch. >> reporter: this restaurant owner will tell you there is a catch just not for consumers. restaurants and businesses can loose money on these deals and have to eat the cost of the 50% discount. on top of that pay groupon or yelp a commission. >> they need to handle it in a way to work for the consumer and the businesses.
