of the excelsior action group mission is to revitalize excelsior corridor. these funds, which support the local merchants, will go along way to enhancing the vitality and appearance of the excelsior corridor. we welcome the opportunity to partner with local merchants on behalf of the excelsior. with those of you -- for those of you not familiar, we are a community action group that was founded in 2002. one event we sponsor each year is that the excelsior music and arts festival. we celebrated our ninth anniversary last sunday, and we had a great festival. it was a great community event that celebrated diversity through music, art, and food. excelsior action groups to support local merchants. this past year excelsior action group completed 10 murals, partnering with local merchants and artists that were installed with lighting. it does not only beautified the corridor, but also serve to make it safe at night. we are also engaged in a community process to recondition the overpass near roll over 2mu. excelsior action group will continue to work together with ou

i have lived in the excelsior since 1999. i have had lots of different jobs, but my main job is doing social work force and a disco, i have been a community organizer, i worked at a labor organization supporting janitor's working in our high- rise buildings. i was a legislative aide before .wr. i got to see how it all work from the outside, community organizations supporting young people, children, families, working for labor, and saw how city hall could be an effective tool for change and then considered running in 2007, 2008, and somehow, i made it. >> you were raised in los angeles, moved to the east coast. what made you want to come back and live in san francisco? >> i love cities. i never felt like i lived in a city in los angeles, but when i lived in massachusetts, where i live, i was close to boston. i had such a great time in boston but i did not like massachusetts so much because it was cold, the culture was foreign to me. when i came to san francisco, the first time i came, there was a rainbow over the bay and there

we are talking about a working- class community, the excelsior, the bayview, all of these different neighborhoods are smaller enclaves. we still see the same kinds of challenges. when the schools begin to perform a stellar academic programs, businesses will continue to relocate because the employees will want to live in san francisco and want kids to be educated here. it is a cyclical and symbiotic creation ship. another challenges that we have the highest unemployment rate in this part of san francisco. san francisco before, the numbers are starting to come down a little bit. we have high rates in the latter part of last year, but it is starting to -- it is starting to normalize. it goes back to education. what i would like to see our pathways. not everyone will become a doctor, lawyer, or journalist, fantastic tv host. what can we do? we live in a society where we need engineers. we need sound engineers. we need graphic designers. there are people who prefer to learn with their hands. they like mechanics. we need to bring back some shop back in schools and allow people an opportunity for a diff

they are the only restaurant that has participated in our excelsior festival and our "oh my" festival. we have monthly family nights in our district, where people can dine with the supervisor and his family and my staff. one of the first restaurants we were at was yama sushi. it was chosen because of its affordability and great people. if you are around the corner of holloway and ashton, it is a great sushi restaurant, and i recommend it highly. supervisor avalos: from the excelsior district, please come forward to the podium, with your loved one, as well. collings, we have seen some really great changes and civic participation in this district under the action group, and a lot of the people you see before us have been working with the action group neighborhood beautification, and is not just looking at our streetscapes and landscaping, but we have artists that have done wonderful work on our commercial corridor. altogether bleak 12 murals, and now we actually have a walking tour of this district, which, i confess, i have not taken yet, so part of this accommodation is setting a date for me to come and have a walking tour. i have seen a lot of murals, but i have not seen all of them like i would like to with your explanation. they have done wonderful work in really beautifying our neighborhoods. these have made a huge difference in preventing graffiti but also showcasing the talents that we have in our midst. we have a wonderful portal over the 280 overpass, which showcases different cultures of our district, and there are man

excelsior, you see a lot of those issues, mission street, the bayview, how do we bring those communities, connect the more? >> one of the opportunities is the tp as we start developing more, what makes sense for each line by community, and if there are other opportunities to augment proposed for future developments to take into account a more comprehensive local access need in that area. what are the issues that the city or regional level? our best role is to articulate them and figure out the best options. we have to figure out individualized solutions and help make this work. president olague: if you could come more often, we could have this conversation more and really integrate the work better. victoria has been working with you so that is great. commissioner moore, we will have him on that side presenting to us on some of the worst issues. >> i would be helpful. president olague: thank you again. there's a lot to think about. last thing is the bicycles. you go to other countries, portland has this setup, you can rent a bike. is there anything in place here? >> we have the bike renta

staff did was we made presentations at a variety of community organizations such as textiles your -- excelsior youth center, the merchants association, we also went to a variety of community events. the bayview writers community association, the resource fair, senior action network convention, chinese action affairs. we participated in operation homeless connects. we also have an opportunity to work with a variety of juvenile justice groups. put together a know your rights pressure that is available in six languages. we have an opportunity to work with mental health providers and community organization. because of being a unique oversight model, academic and international communities are interested. they come and visit us from england, argentina, as far as australia and indonesia. we have an opportunity to work with students locally. through our our reach, we have developed a variety of public service announcements, provided reporting about what we do through our annual report, but also on our web site. there is a conference, which is the national organization for civilian oversight, and membe

this happened at mission and excelsior. that's where an unidentified man was hit by a car about 7:00 last night. he died later at the hospital. there's no word yesterday on whether the driver will be charged in the case. >>> it is 78:03. this morning -- 7:03. this morning a uc berkeley scientist can call himself a nobel prize winner. tara moriarty spoke with him this morning and has more on how he's handling the big news. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. you know, it's been a whirlwind foil -- for mr. perlmutter. there have been a lot of phone calls. it's not every day that a uc berkeley wins the nobel prize in physics. now. we were inside his home. we listened as his wife talked to his excited parents in philadelphia. he found out about his win and could not believe it. he and his team in the late '90s found evidence that the university was expanding the galaxy is getting further and further apart. >> what's amazing here, you might expect that that would slow down. it's not. it's getting faster and fast
