if there is no problem, the passengers can move out of the standard line into the expedited line. these dogs can help us speed up the process by allowing up to 5,000 additional passengers a day to move through the faster security lines. there will also be a shift of 100 t.s.a. staff from part time to full time status so people can be on deck to help with the lines. and officers who currently work on nondirect security functions are going to be called to pitch in and help the officers at the checkpoints. we're also working to get more people enrolled in t.s.a. precheck. i can't emphasize enough how important that is. if you are a regular traveler, for $85, you can buy -- at least apply for and be given a t.s.a. precheck status for five years. precheck lines can scan nearly twice as fast as the ordinary lines. customers don't have to wait as long or remove their shoes, belts or life jackets. we need to make sure more people are hearing about this option and signing up for it as quickly as possible. t.s.a. is now working on a mobile app to help people get enrolled while they are wait

s expedited pre-check procedure. congress has voted an additional $34 million to hire nearly 800 more screeners, but neffenger says that's not enough. today, the union for t.s.a. one is overall staffing for screeners is down something like 5800 screeners since the peak in 2011. they have about 42,500, but it's much fewer than they used to. that i.g. report that found they weren't catching much last summer has prompted them to check bags more thoroughly, so they're taking a closer look at you as you go through the lines. they're going to redo that undercover-up investigation this summer to see. they're catching more. neffenger says they are catching more. and we are also seeing more travelers than ever before. the airlines for america expects 231 million travelers this summer between june 1 and august 31. >> sreenivasan: so what's the ripple effect on the traveler? when we saw and heard those people say how many flights that they've missed. cumulatively this has to be a lot of business concern for the airlines, too. >

to ensure enrollment resources don't become a new bottleneck, tsa should expedite its selection of third party enrollment providers. we support the idea to give directors the ability to corporate with their airline partners to make decisions without having to consult tsa head courters. all parties need to work collaboratively to manage through the summer. full transparency to staffing models and performance data is required to en ed tod to engage stakeholders. we can't be part of the solution if we don't have the facts. to that point, we applaud tsa for its decision to stand up a national command center and ins tuts daily stakeholder calls to better prepare for each day's challenges. in the long run, tsa could review current security prose calls to ensure there are no unnecessary procedures, as part of this review, tsa should consider additional methods some of which were discontinued. airlines and airports are eager to work with tsa to expedite next generation screening technology including innovation lanes. finally tsa must create a position that reports to the administrator to advocat
