"is there a price where people will say, i've had enough i'll throw it in the garbage." recycling may be good for the environment. but it comes with a cost and it's going up soon. an 88 percent increase in the cost of processing recycled paper, plastic, and other items is prompting some changes. the cedar rapids - linn county solid waste agency had covered that cost since curbside recycling began 17 years ago. now that agency will ask communities to share the cost. the change is happening because the cost of processing recyclables has gone now it's cheaper to make a plastic water bottle from new materials than to use recycled materials. also, the value of recyclables has collapsed with many worth next to nothing when sold. and kcrg t-v nine's dave franzman says that's why the solid waste agency says it can't keep subsidizing all the costs. sot/nat day by day, the recycled paper, plastic and cardboard collected curbside throughout linn county keeps piling up at the landf
