abc 7 news reporter matt keller is on capitol expressway. last time we checked in with you, the road there was still closed off. any updates? >> reporter: good morning, jeic he in capilexpressway. you can see firefighters are cleaning up the oil that was now on the back of a tow truck. you can see just how much damage was done to the front of that vehicle there. it's a nissan sentra. i'll have my photographer ian move the camera over to the fire engine. you can see the damage there. i'm told this engine is going to be able to drive off. get this. this truck weighs 44,000 pounds, the nissan sentra weighs 3,000 pound, but still able to move that engine two feet when it crashed into it this morning. all this started when firefighters were called about 2:30 for a vegetation fire off capitol expressway. the engineer for engine 24 was putting out more cones and lights in the road as three other firefighters were battling that fire. that's when that nissan sentra sped through the cone zone. the engineer had to jump out of the way and the car slamme

up until about five minutes ago, the westbound lanes of south capital expressway were totally closed off because there is still missing. the firetruck has just left the scene about five minutes ago. they were responding to a call about a fire. there were parked on the side with the flashing lights on. they had set up cones and all of a sudden a driver, it was dark because it was a middle of the night, the driver of the nissan sedan slammed into the back of the firetruck. the driver was seriously injured. firefighters had to extricate the man from the vehicle. they transported him to a local hospital with pretty serious injuries. we don't have an update on his condition. this happened around 3:30 am this morning. the deputy fire chief out here this morning talked about how it was a close call for the firefighters involved. one of them had just laid down cones and hoses and had to move out of the way from the oncoming car. >> he was out preparing cones. as he was walking by, the vehicle went by him and struck the back of the firetruck. >> reporter: again, the lanes of south capital exp
