i am here to provide a frank response to questions involving the exxon valdez oil spill and to describe our continuing efforts to deal with its consequences. before i do this, however, i want to express my sincere regret as to what happened on behalf of exxon and certainly on behalf of myself. sympatheticcularly to the impacts on the residents the residents of the prince william sound area. that is were the difficulty is really creating problems for these people. as we have said many times times come we take full responsibility and we will do so from the beginning. all necessary resources are being fully employed, as had already been mentioned by secretary skinner, that the environment in the area and the remoteness and the high tides and physical problems associated with it makes it a difficult problem. bill --ents about this about the spill. occurred early on march 44.

has learned its lesson in the exxon valdez? >> yes and no. in the immediate aftermath, they did respond. i make no judgment after the sincerity of their is once. -- response. the attention of the public will turn to other matters, but the attention of the oil industry on the issue of getting lighter regulations, never waned there will always be there and always be doing that. capitalismying about that is not quite as damming as it may sound. capitalism is a moral -- ammoral, it has no soul in the conscious. cost -- is to maximize minimize costs and maximize revenue. 12 forism is a wonderful increasing economic efficiency -- tool for increasing economic efficiency, but it comes with a whole set of risk. what society must never do is forget that it is up to society to set the rules under which capitalism operates. in itselfcapitalism, has no soul and no morality. it will do what it has to to make money. again, it's up to society to never let up because when we do, we get exxon abilities. -- exxon valdez. on march 24,go, 1989, the

first, we need to overturn the exxon valdez case.s is more than about oil spill in prince william sound. this now affects every community in america. what the supreme court judges did is they ruled, they put a cap on punitive damages and on punishment. we do not have a cap on corporate growth. this means punishment will no longer fit these large corporations. it can't. so we have lost our ability to hold these corporations accountable to work with safety laws, to consumer product law, to public health, to environmental law. the issue is what do we connect punishment punishment to, profits or damages? in the exxon valdez case i mentioned, $507 million, four days it's not going to work. , so here is where we can call congress, and the people of -- we want congress to set punitive damages, not the -- not the judges. judges are not supposed to be making law. and the second thing we need to do is we need to strip the corporations of personhood. we need to pass the 28th amendment to the constitution, separation of corporation and state, fo

i am referring here to one of the judges in the exxon valdez case, lower court, ninth circuit, actuallyent on judicial junket sponsored by exxon. whole truth? the jury much to my surprise doesn't get the whole truth. ok? they get what the lawyers agree the jury will have, so in our case, for example the jury didn't even know that exxon -- exxon's skipper did not have a driver's license for driving while intoxicated, but he was at the helm of the supertanker. if the jury is not privy to the whole truth, how are they going to figure out whole compensation? they are not. in our case they didn't know about long-term harm, so we only got compensated for short-term. here's the problem. this is the other problem in the democracy crisis. we don't live in a democracy, we live in a corpacracy. this is the politest thing i can call it. the only corporate value that needs to matter by the law is making money, and this is fine for running a business, but it's not fine for running a country. so remember when the general motors ceo said what is good for general motors is good for america? we believed
