new eye wall. the center is a little decentralized. and the winds have come down, that's great news. they were predicting 145, now they're predicting 130 to 125. that doesn't sound like much, some roofs may hold at that, and some may fly off at that. that's good. some other trends. west palm beach southward, you can see on the radar, i've even taken off some of the areas to the south. we're mostly focussing further to the north. west palm beach will not get worse than what they're seeing now. there are power outages, 50, 60-mile-per-hour gusts, there are some trees down. but they won't have the devastating blow that jacksonville beach, and daytona beach. they can let out a cheer and be happy. but that's not going to be the case from ft. pierce northward. now that we know we're not going to get the high population centers with that direct landfall, we're still very concerned with what's going to happen with the storm surge. we've pretty much cleared you from west palm beach southwards. this is tonig

. >> the eye is just the western edge. florida power and light cannot get out to help when the winds are over 50 miles per hour. it might be different in other parts of the united states but i think it's about 50 when the emergency responders say they cannot go out. >> they cannot do anything. a lot of the transformers have been blowing. the western edge of the eye is clipping cape canaverel. usually a hurricane hits one air. when it hugs the coast is hits a tremendous amount of people. daytona beach is getting hammered. the right front quad of the hurricane is the most dangerous, that's stayed out to sea. but as it moves north, now the focus is the wind and the storm surge, it gets shallower up to jacksonville and the georgia coast. so the storm surge, you are are talking almost a foot coming up. it has a lot of energy and it continues to build. it's deep on parts of florida but that's not the case north ward. the wind will decrease to the south, it becomes a kag two and one and then it -- category two and then a category

the eye, the projected forecast for the eye to be a little further out over the water. that's great news. the problem is, by the time the eye gets up here, it will be right around high tide. so it's going to be much higher and we an tess pate that water will find ways inland into the intercoastal waterway. so all of those beautiful properties could expect to see some water into their homes and some of the businesses closer to the ocean front here. a lot of people did heed the advice to go to shelters. we did not see a whole lot of vehicular traffic during the day on thursday. so that was good news. very little traffic on thursday night. but we don't want people, and officials are emphasizes this, as well. don't come out after this eye has past, thinking the worst is over. because there are going to be several more hours to endure. maybe well into friday night and saturday morning. of course, we've been talking about this forecast, turning this storm a big hard right monday, tuesday. it may be coming back this way, just as we're starting to hear things starting to snap.

eye wall with the track, too. when the national hurricane center puts out the forecast and you see that line, that is for the eye. you figure, even if this hurricane does track a little bit offshoreyo hurricane-force winds along the coastline. if the hurricane tracks with its eye and eye wall over the coastline, you bring in the hundred-plus-mile-per-hour winds. and that is when you would see the most damage. it is a possibility here, especially getting closer to melbourne and then up through the space coast of florida as we get through the overnight hours tonight and through the day tomorrow. thereafter, it starts to weaken in terms of wind speeds. this will produce flooding rain for south carolina, portions of north carolina, at least in the southeastern portion of the state. and then this kind of bends in a much weakened state, at. that hurricane-force winds approaching the miami coastline. i should say north of miami. the florida coastline. up toward boca and west palm beach this evening. this will continue to

here's the eye. at how close it is to west palm beach and that model brings the hurricane force winds and the southern eye wall close to ft. lauderdale. miami, the forecast continues to look a little bit better view. a little too early to let your guard down. here's all the computer models, major models we're watching and the center lines, that's the eye. the circle around it would still be like this for the hurricane force winds but they are looking and trying to move the storm along the space coast with the possible landfall early tomorrow morning. that would be the area right over the top of kennedy space center itself and possibly up will towards new smyrna beach and the storm all day tomorrow. by 8:00 p.m., the center of the forecast is going to be somewhere close to over the top of st. augustine, flagler beach area and amelia island and the strong winds after dark with the areas to the north. one of the biggest problems you get with landfall and hurricanes, or ones like this along the coast for

we're having the battle between the inner eye wall and the outer eye wall. and it looks like we're about at the point where those are consolidating into one, and we will likely see this strengthen. the pressure is still very, very low. once this happens, i think we'll see the storm strengthen as it moves onshore. it has stretched out the wind field, and instead of the strongest winds being in the very, very center of it, we're seeing strong winds across a much wider area. that's what we're going to be seeing as this moves onshore. if we watch this trajectory, we're going to see this moving very, very close toward the cape canaveral area, it's the northern part of florida that will have a much closer brush with this storm. take a look at this one model. it brings the center very close, 9:00, 10:00, 11:00 tomorrow afternoon, right off the shore of northern florida and georgia and then south carolina. we have a long ways to go, at least until saturday night into sunday morning before this thing finally moves offshore. so a long ways to go, a lot of areas that a

here is the doppler radar out of miami showing essentially two eye walls, the outer eye wall is right here fort pierce toward west palm beach where winds are gusting 60 miles per hour, but in terms of the most intense twhainsd found right at the inner eye wall which is right here, and it look like looking at some new information as well as the hurricane center's new forecast track, that inner eye wall, that intense eye wall may parallel and stay just offshore late tonight and tomorrow morning. that would be good news for the late tonight and through the day tomorrow as well as very heavy rain and a storm surge approaching seven to 11 feet. north florida, georgia and south carolina. >> kim: crews in haiti surveying the damage now after matthew ravaged that country. the impoverished nation left to pick up the pieces and deal with a lot of death. the bahamas also dealing with damage. and from florida to the carolinas they're still bracing for what's to come. the is here with the impact the storm will have on the sunshine state. >> reporter: more than 60,000 people are without power as th

but we're starting to see some of the inner eye reform. we're getting the heavy rain and wind working through ft. pierce and melbourne and you can see some of the rain working north, as well. so we'll continue to track this storm matthew and show you the most recent track in our next update. >> thank you very much. i'm sure we'll be going back to you. i want to turn to craig melvin who is in melbourne, florida, where things are a little more severe. let's take a listen to craig's report. >> reporter: good morning from downtown melbourne. you can see that the rain has picked up a little bit. it's certainly not what we're expecting in the next few hours. the winds have picked up considerably. and if you look closely, to the left here, you can probably see it. that downed stop light. there's a downed stop light in the street here. that's the first one we've seen. also debris starting to accumulate in some of the streets here, as well. one of the problems that we have not seen materialize just yet, power outages. you'll notice that most of the

and there is the eye wall right there. southeast of freeport bahamas ad that will continue moving northwest at about 14 miles per hour. holding up course and sometimes these eye walls, these monster storms wobble around. the conditions will rapidly deteriorate later on this evenig and overnight tonight. this is one of our computer models up we rely on and you can as soon up it is forecasting up storm to continue northwest, yellow and the warm colors indicating the very heavy rain, that's also where you find your strongest winds. so at about midnight tonight the outer edge of the eye wall likey making its closest pass near fot pierce. and at that time winds may approach 100 to perhaps as high as 130 miles per hour. unfortunately it looks like it parallels the 95 corridor. anticipating winds next excess f 80 miles per hour. in fact one of our computer models indicating up as up eye wall approaches it will get cloe to 100 miles per hour. west palm beach, the eye wall very close there and up continus through tomorrow, jacksonv

this is the eye and the eye is now hitting the beach. that's 100 mile per hour wind, 100 mile per hour gusts into palm coast, st. augustine. those winds are going to be between 80 and 90 miles an hour as long as this eye stays onshore or just offshore. here's the difference. let me draw the coast. it's kind of hard to see. there's the coast of florida. this is the track of the storm. now, if florida would be like this, wo it would be crossing t coast and right onshore. so the angle of florida's coast is actually helping the amount of damage be slightly less as the coast moves away, the storm is trying to move away as well. here's the animation here. there is still going to be all of this water piling up in jacksonville. this is what we are worried about. also as the storm continues to try to turn on up toward brunswick and tybee island, all of that water is going to get into that corner where the atmosphere here, where the whole coastline decides to turn just a little bit here. now, let me take you to look at this on the floor. this is w

we have been watching this inner eye wall, and outer eye wall, the potentially eye wall replacement cycle which tends to indicate a strengthening hurricane, but as you look at this radar loop just in the past hour we've already seen some changes. it looks i can loo tlike the in getting absorbed by the outer ring. this is about 60 nautical miles wide and that was taken by hurricane hunters. what is also interesting is it's a double-edged sword, whether or not when the storm comes closer to florida whether we are looking at the larger eye wall or the smaller one. inside the smaller one we are seeing the more intense winds. the outer maybe 10 o to 15 miles an hour less. but it's wider, you are impacting a larger area if it were to continue in this northwest direction. watching the radar, we have noticed a little bit more of a northerly north westerly jog. but officially it is to the northwest at this time. the storm will do its wiggles as it gets closer to florida. let's take a look at the track, pause since 11:00 p.m., we have seen some big changes. in fact it's important to note because no

the eye wall.ngest winds should be felt in the upper northern quadrant where we would typically see perhaps category 3 hurricane winds for that particular region. getting into specifics, you can see how the trajectory of this storm, as it continues to move in a northwesterly direction running paralegal with the -- parallel with the florida coast and these bands shaded in yellow and dark green, that will be the most intense part of the storm, as they rotate in they push in considerable amount of storm surge not to mention strong winds already have been hurricane force in many locations including cape canaveral moving north to daytona beach and jacksonville and savannah during the course of the morning. let me tell you what we know right now. the category is three 120 miles an hour winds, gusts 150. remember, the bulk of the strongest winds just offshore. it is moving basically at a snail's pace and really still about 90 miles south and east of daytona. that is the latest information we have here. th

this is the eye here. the center of the eye is the calm of the storm. this area to the north, this is where we're watching the hurricane force winds. titusville area, you are in danger of the winds. the outer eye will get the worst wind daniel. this is a representation of that showing red coloring. that's where worst damage is. orange is tropical storm. in red is when destruction can begin. as far as what i'm most concerned with. wind damage today will be in moderate hurricane category. big deal if you're along the coast. monetary damage. we won't see houses blown to pieces. as far as the storm surge goes, this is still the part that can be historic. this area of red. this will happen this morning. daytona beach as we head toward the noon hour in jacksonville and tonight the georgia coastline. i'm sure you've been up around hilton head area. they could experience 10 to 12 foot storm surge in areas of south carolina. the most monetary damage would be in the florida area but i think we could have equally as bad of damage in south carolina. i'm thrilled an

even west palm beach is expected to go thru the eye. you're on the weaker side of the eye, but you winds will be 100 to 125. >> put that in perspective. if you're not in the eye, how bad is if if you're getting 100 to 120 mile snz. >> into catastrophic. most building codes in florida are pretty strenuous, up to 100, 120. you get these gusts 120-plus. windows will be blowing out, roofs will be blowing off homes and businesses and hotels. that's the stuff that it's hard to make something sturdy enough to survive for a long period of time winds up to 150. the problem, stephanie, is it goes from port st. lucie up the florida coastline. this is an incredibly destructive path. where that northern eye could be right along the coast. here's how it's going to look on radar. this is our future radar, shows you where the storm is this morning. you don't want to be in this, this is the eye of the storm, the center, the calm. the damaging winds are here, and the storm surge is north of that eye, so at 11:00 p.m. this evening, that eye could be doing

the outer eye wall absorbs the inner eye wall and tend to relax the strength. when you think about an ice skater, when they go really fast, they pull their arms in tighter so they could go faster. when the eye wall replacement cycle happens and the outer band absorbs the inner band, we see the storm weaken but not by much. they continue to pummel melbourne and right here we have stewart and outside of it jensen beach. jensen beach reported a wind gus of 71 miles per hour right along the coastal area. stuart, florida reported gusts of 51 miles per hour. not hurricane force yet but it's just a matter of time. let's take a look at the current position of the storm. it still 50 miles east southeast of the beach. we're watching for the storm track to have the potential for rain, storm surge and flooding. we mentioned the 7 to 11 feed, it's right through this region here through coastal georgia and in through south carolina. part of reason is because of the bend that we naturally have and the angle at which the storm is working its way toward that area. eventually it

just because the eye passes doesn't mean the storm is over. this is a pretty large system, so we do anticipate that there will be hurricane force and certainly tropical storm force winds that will blow around this area for hours after the eye has passed. possibly into late into tonight and maybe even into saturday a lot of folks are not thinking about this, for good reason because it's a long way up, but the first part of next week, this storm could possibly reloop around the ocean, right off florida. reenergize and come back and hit some of these same communities that it's hitting today. that would be cruel at a time where the folks are trying to clean up and get the power back on. that's the latest here from daytona beach. going to be a long friday. back to you. >> long and tough holiday weekend for many there. beach. >> as hurricane matthew moves up florida's coast, jacksonville will be the last city affected ipflorida before hurricane matthew makes its way to coastal georgia. gabe gutierrez is live in jacksonville for us. is it the calm be
