we talked to medics, to eyewitnesss, to government officials. as far as sanaa we're hearing numbers as high as 40. now, tribesmen there are saying at least 20 of their tribesmen have been killed in fighting in the past couple of days. government forces are saying at least 15 soldiers and one army general have been killed. what we don't know is the correct number of civilians killed. it's very hard to get a handle on that number. everybody i speak with there is concerned this casualty figure is really going to go up once it calms down enough so an assessment can be made and real casualty figures can be counted. in taiz where there are government clashes, the u.n. put out a number in the last couple of days saying as many as 50 were killed by government forces in the past few days while they were peacefully protesting. there's been a lot of international condemnation at yemen's president because there's a fear the people that are out there trying to protest peacefully and demand the ouster of the president are being fired upon and getting killed.

what we had been hearing from eyewitnesss and activists over the weekend is that the military laid siegesyria, entering it using tanks, armored personnel carriers, even according to activists, using attack helicopters to indiscriminately strike at residents. and today we have this news coming out on syrian state television that some sort of clashes had erupted, resulting in great casualties to syrian security forces. now, we did get in touch with one activist who's a resident in the area. he said that some people were trying to fight back using their hunting rifles. another activist saying that it did appear that in this case, individuals had, in fact, armed themselves and were quite certainly, or it would appear to this activist that they were fighting back. but this a very disturbing development, and activists growing increasingly worried that these types of possibly extremist armed elements are going to try to hijack what activists were really trying to make sure remained a peaceful uprising at this stage, john.
