we have heard eyewitnesss saying people trying to go back out the way they came in. the gunman instead of away. the last part of this why the fatalities and injured mounted so much is also the fact that many people did not know where this gunfire was coming from. your last guest said she knew it was coming from above. but a lot of other people all they have talked about is we didn't know which direction was coming from. you watch the videos and see people looking all sorts of directions. and ultimately many of them hunkering do you know where they were trying to be safe, even as she said get down, unaware the gunman could see all of them out there, jake. those are three reasons why this attack went on so long and so many people were killed and hurt. >> lan, tom, tell us about the set up that the shooter had in his hotel room? >> we don't know a whole lot about it but know he was in there three days ahead of the because this concert was going on all weekend, he had that whole time to look at the area to see the lay of the land. he also had time to bring in this hammer

what we know so far about this suspect is is that according to eyewitnesss, when he was in that area, he yelled a la akbar before converging into the attack. he's described as a man in his 30s with middle eastern appearance. this description coming from three law enforcement officials there on the ground. that suspect now taken to bellevue hospital where he almost certainly is under heavy guard. they really want to know as much as they can about this suspect out of fear that he could be a part of some sort of a team, if you will, so certainly they are doing everything they can both on the ground and behind the scenes to make sense of what happened here and why this particular suspect chose that area to pull out or carry out what's now being described as an intention attack. >> you were saying there's a lot of people in the area. it reminds you of the areas along the river. a lot of people out jog iging. there was a high school that was nearby. so definitely some scary times in that area. and we know that a number of law enforcements are investigating at that point. and still there are

we have been able to speak to e eyewitnesss actually at the scene. one person described for us the scene of chaos that ensued. many accounts saying they first thought it was part of the show. it was fireworks they were hearing. quickly became obviously it will reality set in and became known it was an active shooter situation. we have also the 911 calls going into the dispatch. hear the voices of those reporting in multiple gunshot wounds coming from an elevated floor at the mandalay bay hotel. >> i want to repeat for people to understand that they are looking for this companion of the shooter. asian female standing 4'11". two cars that they're looking for if you are in the local area to keep you eye out for and want to of course help authorities out as they continue the investigation. hyundai tuscan and chrysler pacifica. also the red cross is taking calls from family members saying the plates on the screen there. make sure to drop that down in the area to help authorities out there. take all the help that i have can get. if you are looking for memb

many eyewitnesss said they did that here.o even though the shooting was coming through here, as panic set in here, people did not know to look there. and he was somewhat barricaded there. so let's go back to that time there. 10:08 p.m. we know there were emergency calls to the police. by the time the police figured out it was at the hotel and made their way over there, it was somewhere around 10:20 to 10:24. this gets really murky because we don't know the details. but we know that the police were working their way up through floors of the hotel based on what they were told by witnesses outside and people inside trying to narrow it down and figure out where it was. and they did locate the room sometime around 10:24. and then a little bit after that, we don't know precisely when, they tried to make their first attempt to get into the room. so we have left that blank, but sometime between 10:25 and 10:30 it looks like. and what happened when they tried to do that? well, they said they approached the room, they received gunfire,

speaking to eyewitnesss who were there when the deadly shooting occurred. steve? >> reporter: stephanie, the sun has risen now, much of the las vegas strip is shut down, but we are seeing pedestrian foot traffic. take a look back here, the sun is glaring. i'm not sure how well you can see this, but the police have shut much of this scene and condensed it into what you see now. which is is a few squad cars and police are meeting back there. if you push on even further back beyond the tropicana, you will see the scene close ore the mandalay hotel where the horrific shooting was. this is where a lot of the staging took place throughout the night. we saw the fire trucks come in, the emt workers and people being loaded on stretchers. and we saw police in full riot gear. a lot of times armed with long guns. a lot of times leaning against squad cars because they didn't know which way fire was coming. and also, they had so many reports overnight of multiple locations where gunfire had broke out. thankfully, those turned out not to be true and police were able to focus on
