i want to bring in ezra klein. i wanted to talk to ezra about the nastiness of this campaign. look, after getting crushed by an avalanche of ads, newt gingrich is vowing to fight back. he says he's going into new hampshire. he's going into florida. let me play for you a little bit of what he said this morning. >> we are not going to go out and run nasty ads. i do reserve the right to tell the truth. and if the truth seems negative, that may be more a comment on his record than it is on politics. >> so, we have newt gingrich, who calls romney a liar. i'm running a nice campaign, but you lied about me. santorum says ron paul is disgusting. there was another interesting thing this morning. what was it? newt is a chicken hawk, according to ron paul. hoy nasty is this going to get, ezra? >> this is not -- i would say one thing is it's not that nasty. liar, you lied about my record, that's pro forma. ron paul's an odd duck in a primary when he's outside the republican mainstream, i'm not shocked there. they've been, i think, not only not that nasty with one another but actually, wha

and ezra's exactly right.itt on romney care because he supported the individual mandate. newt can't go after mitt on global warming -- that's newt's biggest problem right now with going negative. there's not enough space between them. >> and he's also not new and fresh and he's not exciting for us to cover. and the reason also negative ads work whether we like them or not because they're fact-based. even if they're lies, you take away facts from a negative ad, it's very hard in a positive ad to give real facts most of the time. so the reason negative ads work is not because we like negative ads. a consumer is able to take facts away whether they're true or false much easier than a positive ad. that's why it's always going to be here. >> what's your impression about what the candidates are campaigning for? i hear them talking to voters in south carolina a little bit. i hear them talking to voters in florida. in fact, mitt romney was in south carolina yesterday. is there a sense that this is just kind of a quick

. >> ezra? >> on the tax issue, i thought the more interesting element was on the corporate tax side. he argued for something called a global minimum tax. basically, what that is, currently, a company can put their money in ireland, and ireland has a very, very low corporate tax rate. you don't have to pay taxes on that money until you bring it back, which corporations often never do or don't do until congress passes a special overseas profits tax break. under this, you would have to pay the difference between the irish tax rate and this global minimum tax every year. so you wouldn't be able to just sock your money away and never pay any american taxes on it. that's a big change to our, to the way we treat overseas corporate income, and will be if congress, in fact, does take it up, which obviously is a big if, a huge, huge fight. >> ezra, let me just ask you, on this subject, in terms of the specifics, tax or otherwise, what do you think was the most ambitious specific policy that the president

they've all gone up in the past two years, which i found interesting, ezra.ts. so the jump in this perception is across party lines, ezra. >> you have to ask yourself what we're seeing in the poll. there 24 possibilities. one is that people are hearing the question and saying, i -- i feel like there's a bigger conflict between the rich and the poor than i did two years ago. the other answerç is that they are saying they believe that america feels that way. and it's a little unclear which it is. if they believe america feels that way, they could be listening to the two parties. could be listening to occupy wall street or to a lot of media coming at them that suggests we're having a fair amount more talk about class war, class conflict, tax cuts for the rich than we were a few years ago. if it's "i" then you are probably seeing people who say that business profits, corporate profits, financial profits have rebounded and median incomes haven't come back and they see the economy working very well for people at the top fd they see tension there. they see a causal

and ezra klein is with us. of legislation that most americans didn't know a thing about. this week, both intellectual property bills are dominating headlines thanks to a epic and historic coordinated day of protests on wednesday. sites like wikepedia, even green peace went completely dark and other sites redacted large parts of their content and google putting a black bar over its logo and collecting 7 million u.s. signatures in one day in an online petition to stop sopa. that one-day protest resulted in a stunning 19 members of congress in one day in the senate abandoning their support for the two bills, including i love this detail -- 11 cosponsors. 11 people with names on the legislation after that one day decided no longer to support it. chris dodd said those bills were supposed to be a slam dunk but now he, quote, could not remember seeing an effort that was moving with this degree of support change this dramatically. he went on to compare to the arab spring which i think was not the metaphor he wanted to

joined now by "the washington post" columnist and msnbc contributor, ezra klein. chance to attack the candidates, their super pacs. what do we know about the speech and how does the president plan to connect with voters? >> let's do some context, what this speech will not do is transform american politics, gallup looks at polls after every state of the union and what they say despite what everybody thinks about state of the unions, they never, almost never, have a real affect on presidential approval ratings. the only president who had a demonstrative effect from his state of the unions was bill clinton and that effect was three percentage points in the polls, which shortly thereafter disappeared. these do not change american politics, they do set an agenda for the next year. what barack obama is going to attempt to do tomorrow night is set the agenda that puts the playing field of 2012 over topics he's comfortable around. equality, fairness in the economy, failures of the bush tax cuts, which would reset the terms of the debate, but don't expect anything in the s
