so ezra had a lasting impression on the house. many of the books in the 3000 volume library that we have are from him inscribed, and the ripley name continues over the generations here. so you can really see the influence that he had as a minister and town leader as well. ralph waldo emerson was born in 1803 in boston, massachusetts. he was a local boy, of many sorts. he spent his life in the city but for every time he also also came over to the old manse when he was younger when his round 12 and continue to visit the property throughout his life. and again when he wrote "nature" in 1834, when he at his mother came for a visit the reverend as ripley was here. he was becoming elderly and so the health care for them for a brief period of time. so for emerson even though he was born a city boy, he certainly was moving in this area, and concord was a home for him. so in 1834 he comes to the old manse and puts himself in the upstairs study, which at the time was also a bedroom that he could stay in and that is where he wrote "nature,"
