f. kennedy five fateful months before he was assassinated. he masterfully delivered the hope for which berlin craved as he stood before tens of thousands of people in front of west berlin city hall. he uttered the famous words, [speaking foreign language] . he set the stage for democratic principles in west berlin. president work -- richard nixon came. he said the city was nearing a climax with the communist war. the newspaper called nixon the mightiest man in the world and another newspaper said the travel to berlin was evidence that washington will continue to share the risk of maintaining freedom in berlin. they noted that while the 1963, kennedy had pleaded for berlin's status quo and nixon declared the status quo not good enough. he declared official ties between west germany and west berlin. the next u.s. leader, gerald ford -- didn't make it to berlin but jimmy carter did. carter came to precious former -- on july 15, 1978. president and misses carter arrived and were greeted by berlin's allied military -- like presidents before him, c
