can bypass the faa's own training program. they are the university of oklahoma and tulsa community college. new hires who graduate from those programs can now begin work as air traffic controllers, nearly immediately, you might say, pete, those two universities really sound like all that much, but the faa says, this is just the start. the goal here is to expand this program to deal with a shortage that's really not getting all that much better last month, the faa says it hired 1,800 controllers. this year, big dent in that 3,000 controller shortage. but the increase after retirements and attrition it is really the most important number in may, we reported that the faa has netted only 100 and controllers overall. the good news is that the faa is about to open its hiring window again next friday, and the median pay according to federal role data is $137,000 pretty good scratch if you can get it, never been a better time to get an aviation career. there's a lot more out there than just being a pilot and gamers are especially good

was actually happening is the faa was not closing down any errors race, there was an issue with pilot starling equipment to where it needed to be, having the right information. we worked that would local authorities, and we were able to take care of it. i think to me, is an example about how often the best thing to do is to pick up the phone. i do want to get too much into the weeds, since there has been some confusion about the faa's temporary flight restrictions, i should explain how it works. this is a process that has been in place for decades. what happens is, if you have a disaster area, a lot of rescue operations going on, a local airport or fire department or the coast guard, somebody like that, can request what is called a tfr. it doesn't shut down the airspace, but it increases the level of coordination that goes on, as you want to make sure that that airspace is safe and you prevent the risk of collisions. so when you hear that term, that is what is going on. i don't me to get that technical, i've been amazed at how a little curl of some detail gets blown up on the internet
