last month we interviewed jacques cousteau's grandson fabian. his expedition honored his grandfather's 50th anniversary. we are pleased to welcome fabian cousteau back, great to see you. how did it feel coming back out of the water, what's the transition been like? >> it's been a very bittersweet moment to pierce that veneer back on land. being down for 31 days was an overstimulating amazing time. and then getting back to the surface, being elated to come and see our friends and family was one thing. but then there was also a lack of stimulus. getting back into air, it was empty. there was no sound. there were just humans waiting for us and no fish. >> so there's that much more going around underwater? >> well ah conveyor -- aquarius has stayed down for almost 20 years. it is a fireworks display of life and it is wholly protected in that area. so it's the way the oceans should be. and you know, it was like a kid in a candy store. >> sounds fascinating. how was the transition physically though being cupped up in this -- cupped u cooped us laborat

joining me now is film maker and oceanographic explorer fabian cousteau. this is exciting stuff.quarius, nine miles off store and 63 feet done. >> is that a permanent facility? >> the facility is permanent and it's been the best-kept secrets in the ocean. it's been there for 20 years and no one even knew about it. >> how much room is it? is this one of those tight sub -- submarine? >> it depends on how many are in it. it's about the size of a school bus. i had about five of my friends. there's six total. >> there's so much happening in our oceans now, including just things that have been, you know, untouched by time, that we continue to discover. but then there's all the modern damages that are happening to especially in sea lanes and to coral reeves that are anywhere near human beings, who just have a very bad way of destroying these things. >> unfortunately, human impact is a major factor in what we see today in our oceans. the oceans have changed dramatically over the last 50, 60 years. between climate change related issues as well as pollution and all those things. but it's a

fabian cousteau knows what it takes, he's the grandson of jacques cousteau. this report from the florida keys. >> this is the first time in weeks that fabian cousteau has seen the open skies and breathed fresh air. since the beginning of june, he's been living and working 20 meters below the surface in a specially underwater laboratory. the idea behind the expedition was to show that long stays living underwater be viable, using techniques that his grandfather helped developed. the entire expedition was broadcast via the internet. >> my grandfather would have loved to talk to people, whether students, young, young at heart or the news or other scientists around the world from aquarius. >> it's the in venters and research that make this significant. scientists don't need to go to go decompression. that means months of important research can be done in just weeks. >> they can go outside and put in a full workday. they can stay six to eight hours out there and really only need to go back to the habitat to get food and sleep at night. >> it is the only laboratory

yesterday fabian cousteau broke his grandfather's record for days living under water.utta of our miami statin reports. his "mission 31" coming to an end, the explorer telling us he got emotional about leaving. >> i don't know. it's bittersweet. feeling good physically, emotionally. >> reporter: cousteau has plenty to be proud of. the grandson of famed jacques cousteau has topped his grand erie's record and he made it look easy. >> it's strange. i don't miss anything up there. i'm actually very comfortable down here. >> reporter: we dropped down two weeks ago to visit his quarters. rurly the size of a school bus, he had all the comforts of home including wi-fi. he spent the day talking to classrooms via skype. >> i discovered there's still a big passion by the general public for the ocean. this was a shot in the dark. this could have been a total failure. >> reporter: scientists carried out fascinating experiments along the way. >> we were able to get a tremendous amount of data collected. >> 12 terabytes? >> yeah. >> reporter: that's the equivalent of six months of div

>>> i'm fabian cousteau and we are living underwater in the only marine laboratory. >> fabian cousteausteau and the team during their living 63 feet down and we have cousteau now. welcome back to the surface. >> good morning, victor. good morning, alison. how are you? >> good morning. >> so did you have to get -- i guess when you got back on land, are you a little uneasy? is it difficult to walk? >> well, it's been an epic, exhausting, surprising and very rewarding expedition. the first time we pierced the surface, it was a little surprising. you know? there was the air on your face. the sun, and then there was a lack of sound. a lack of activity. it was only human beings on a boat waiting for me, rather than sea life everywhere around me. >> so your underwater lab gave you and your fellow aquanauts a chance to spend long hours on the ocean floor, long hours of scuba dives. did it lead to a change in ocean research? could we see more aquanauts living under water and first of all, tell us the significance of the 31 days as opposed to maybe just 30 days? >> the 31st day is to mark symbol
