[applause] >> please welcome andrew lipman, social professor of history barnard college and chair of the 2020s or bancroft prizes jury. h, delighted to welcome you all tonight to celebrate three remarkable books. now, as anne mentioned, beginning last year, the library introduced a new format for this ceremony. instead of having the winners give acceptance features. we're now featuring interviews, the authors, so we can really get into the meat of their books. but before we get to that, i've been asked to offer some short about the juries process and thinking, and i have say our work was only possible thanks to the absolutely stellar faculty and staff at columbia libraries. under the leadership of ann thornton, they offered wise counsel, managed the complex logistics of delivering and organizing submissions and also planning this beautiful ceremony. tonight. and on behalf of the jury, i'd like to thank you all. you made this so m

want to make sure that the full time faculty at the miller center so that's my colleague here and mickey russell riley whom is the co-chair with me of oral history. dan and mark are in the presidents recordings program and our day jobs are doing our programmatic work but we are also expected to do scholarship that's based on that programmatic work and sometimes beyond it. and so bill said, i want to make sure you all have sabbatical opportunities, chairs, for example, chaired professors in the university. i know typically henry abraham every six semester would get a leave. we're at about every 13th semester, but still grateful for that. and i know that mark would that opportunity to go for to the kennedy library and delve deeply into the archive there in addition to taking his day job of working in the in the tapes. so for people who may not be as familiar mark with the recordings program and the kennedy tapes, secret white house tapes that he tell us about that and then tell us about using those resource sources that the miller center produces, but also the archives that you were able to delve into at the kennedy presidential library. well, i w

history. there is a character and culture to each school and the character of culture of mid 20th century ucla economics was one of courage. an entrenched facultyshwater economist, pushing against those liberals up in new england as they are. they were different at ucla. a guy who died in 88 last year, he was a hero in my house and someone once said to me he was the marine coming out of the trenches. andrew has been the marine in this odd on fed cycle. you have taken shrapnel for your high-yield call. people are like no. yet you reaffirm the fed higher this morning. andrew: if you look at the economic data -- the first time on the show. thanks. if you look at the economic data, it keeps coming in, showing a tight labor market. we keep getting these numbers from spending. i don't think we're going to get five or 6% gdp this quarter but probably at least 2%, maybe 3% gdp growth. you did hear some of that coming out of jackson hole. look at the core inflation numbers, they have slowed for a couple of months, that is good news. headline inflation has slowed so there is good news in terms of price pressure that is more subdued. but when you look at
