andy mahoney is an ice researcher at the university of alaska, fairbanks. he says industry field research shows oil can get into ice. >> what we do know from limited field experiments, mostly in norway, and even more limited field experiments in ice tanks and cold labs, that the oil will make its way into the ice. ice will be somewhat like a sponge, and so you'll have a mix of oil covered ocean, oil covered ice and oil impregnated ice. >> jip researchers suggest that oil impregnated ice can also be an advantage when it comes to cleanup. >> while it may limit our access to it, it also limits the access of that oil to marine life and to anything else that might be impacted by the oil. >> but dr. mahoney also studies ice movement. ice floes are constantly drifting and can move hundreds of miles within weeks. >> that's why it's important to understand ice motion. and you can do that with radars like on this ship. >> in 2014 the national academy of sciences released this report on the state of science and technology to respond to an arctic oil spill. the report

a car crashed into an amish buggy that was carrying seven people between fairbank and hazleton. the crash didn't seriously hurt anyone, and the horse escaped, but the impact destroyed the top of the buggy. kcrg t-v nine's chris earl met with some amish today in buchanan county and asked how they want drivers to approach and pass them. last friday night, buchanan county sheriff's deputy cory hartmann came upon a mangled amish buggy after investigators say a car smacked the buggy -- at a fairly high rate of speed. "58:47 about 45-50 miles per hour. " with 7 people inside the buggy, hartmann said the impact could have been far worse. he's from fairbanks. he owns several businesses there. it's a mix of businesses. one is a plumbing distribution company. but he also has a handful of coffee shops. quite a difference between the plumbing distribution and coffee shops. for tax purposes his businesses are treated as separate entities. and for legal purposes, they're treated as separate entities. makes sense. but for some reason, for purposes of health insurance, these are all lumped into one bucket. so he has his employees from the coffee shop, his employees from the plumbing distribution so he's got to be required to provide health insurance when the mandate kicks in because he has 50 employees altogether, even though he doesn't have 50 employees in every one of his very, very dimp businesses. he's talked to me about what he's going to do about the prospect of possibly downsizing because of cost of doing business under the a.c.a. for him is just too high. and this issue is also resolved in the bill by reducing the penalty for noncompliance with the employer mandate to zero. employers will once agai

this is a kid from west philadelphia, was assigned to an air base outside fairbanks. the year is 1942, winter of 1942. and what they were doing at the time, among other things, was doing cold weather testing of aircraft. and the idea was that they were worried next war front might be greenland, norway, manager like that. something like that. so he went up with four crew members and himself, five members on the plane in a b-24 bomber, and they were going to do something called prop feathering which is closing down the prop and trying to make it more aerodynamic. so, basically, shutting down an engine. the plane went into a spin. he bailed out, leon crane, lieutenant crane bailed out through the bomb bay. another person dirked as well, but e -- did as well, but he certainly died leaving the aircraft. it was -70 probably at that altitude. and crane parachutes down, lands by a frozen river. the plane is burning up on a hill, and for the next 81 days being considered dead by everyone, the military, his family, through huge luck his adaptability, his resilience, he managed
