. >> reporter: hey, kris, this is fairdale, illinois, what is left of fairdale, illinois, after the massiveorm system moved through yesterday leaving a lot of damage. in fairdale as a matter of fact the authorities are telling us this morning that every single building in this town has been damaged in one way or another. this is the place where one woman 67-year-old woman lost her life as this storm system moved through. the size of these tornadoes was quite incredible to watch, as they moved covering about a 50-mile span through this area. all of illinois almost yesterday was under some form of tornado watch or warning, and it was later in the evening around 8:00 or 9:00 when the twisters started to touch down and as you can see from the shape of this house behind me here, it has left a lot of damage. this is a very small town and it's going to be very hard to recover from this. >> all right, thank you very much, kevin. surprising though only one person dead but several others are missing, thank you. >> the surrounding area there, you could take a look, the surrounding winds as well, a tru

reporter: the governor announcing the solemn news in fairdale illinois, a small town less than two hours outside of chicago. the tornado that ripped through there on thursday evening all but wiped the town off the map! >> oh my gosh! reporter: 15 tornadoes were reported in the midwest yesterday. almost all of them focused on illinois but also hitting missouri and iowa. watch what the force of the winds does to this semi. >> oh! he's over! he's over! >> oh, [beep]! reporter: a 50-mile path of destruction. >> the roof blew off and the walls came down and the second floor fell on the first floor. i need a new house. reporter: residents in rochelle illinois wondering how they can put back together the pieces of their lives. since the storm hit the sheriff has been working nonstop. >> i was born and raised in this community and it's a privilege to be able to serve them. reporter: for him, deft station has been personal. >> as all of you know my house is gone. reporter: that storm front headed east and from texas to delaware, there will be warnings for extreme weather though the destruction is

i'm tracking it for you right here all the way past rochelle and into fairdale illinois. yes, that's what a tornado did as it moved over land. it made that mark that scar on the earth as it moved toward the north and east. and so definitely these storms mean business when they're moving through the area. thankfully as we come back to the weather for tuesday, we're not talking about any type of severe storms of that nature. but we are looking out for the possibility of some heavy rainfall, and yes, a few thunderstorms from time to time. this low is going to bring in a lot of moisture from the south. and so look out for the possibility of some flash flooding. some areas may see close to 100 millimeters of rainfall in a short period of time along the eastern seaboard of the united states. and also another low that's moving into the pacific northwest which will bring rain and possibly some snow for the northern rockies into the cascades. so look out for that. looking at 12 for the high in seattle. 24 in denver. cold in oklahoma city at 12 degrees. and rain from d.c. extending

every home in fairdale illinois is either destroyed or damaged. >> i just remember stuff hitting, falling. i didn't know what to think. then finally when it was over, the house was gone. >> reporter: two people died including a 67-year-old woman who was preparing to leave for her daughter's birthday party. >> my mother-in-law, she, um, she didn't make it downstairs. >> reporter: fairdale doesn't have a siren system. [ sirens ] >> reporter: but warning alarms sounded in the nearby town of rochelle. 12 people rode out the storm in the basement of this restaurant. >> we pulled in here and ran inside. got a couple of pictures of the tornado right across the street from us here. and the owner said, in the basement! we went down in the basement. >> it took rescue crews 90 minutes to dig them out. the tornadoes made lines into farm fields and pulled homes from their foundations. some of the rescuers were also victims. >> we went to work and helped the other people that needed the help and i got there this morning at 5:00 to see that my house was gone. >> reporter: many are now salvaging what the

and hello everyone, at home, and that's right, i'm in fairdale, illinois. about 70 miles to the west to the city of chicago. and a massive tornado struck this town yesterday afternoon. complete destruction here in the town of fairdale. we understand that every single home either suffered damage or were completely destroyed. and i also understand there will be a press conference at 9:00 a.m. eastern time here in the town of fairdale. they'll be providing us with the latest information. and what we do know due to the severity of the damage, the fire department is helping to respond to the damage here in fairdale. and, again, we understand that every home sustained some form of damage and at least 17 structures completely destroyed. and the town south of here just a few miles south of here, rochelle, there was a restaurant that was destroyed by another tornado as another storm ripped through that area. and crews were rescuing people from debris there. this was all part of a storm that produced severe weather not only in illinois but across parts of iowa, missou
