fairfax county is the blue part of the purple. and in fairfax county, there is some trouble. heading into the voting period, republicans should have recognized there was going to be trouble, should have recognized the omen that things were going to be difficult when the local republican party in that county objected to a button that democratic party volunteers wanted to wear at polling places. the local republicans said democrats should not be allowed to wear such a partisan political slogan anywhere near where people were actually voting. the objectionable slogan on the button was this -- every vote counts! the republican party of fairfax county, virginia, objects to that blatantly partisan sentiment! they tried to get those pins banned. "every vote counts!" are you kidding? that's so democratic! they tried to get those pins banned. it did not work, but it should have been a sign that they tried. on election night, there was yet more weirdness. there seemed to be thousands of votes just missing in fairfax county. when people requested absentee ballots to vote in this electio

before the fairfax jumped into the mix there were other private equity firms like suburban that were very interested in this company so i think they're going to take a position in the company earn an interest rate and then i think look at some of these other companies like to see what they do now that black berry is now open to take out other investments now how wall street has not responded well to the news this takeover falling apart what are the benefits and drawbacks of fairfax investing one billion dollars into the company rather than just taking it over. well i think that here you know fairfax gets a greater return on their investment versus just being an equity holder so they they have some security against the money that they've put up and taking it over you know is a big i mean is a is a difficult thing to do and take private and remember this company is a canadian based company so the rules will be slightly different in a takeover situation than they would be in the american marketplace and from what i understand a bit more difficulty in the regulatory environment so i thin

the fairfax county electoral board gave a nod for her vote."ckson had to vote with a provisional ballot in virginia's elections this time. that meant it was not a sure thing that her vote would be opened up and counted in this election. kathy jackson showed up to plead her case, to plead with the electoral board to please count her vote. and thumbs up she got the nod from the electoral board. her vote will be counted. ms. jackson was one of dozens of people in fairfax county who had to make the trek back to the elections office over the last few days to argue that their vote should be counted in this very, very close election. each of those people really, really matters. virginia's election isn't over yet. a week after the polls close now. i mean we know that ken cuchinelli will not be the governor. will the democrats sweep the statewide races. we do not know. we have no idea who is going to be the attorney general of the commonwealth of virginia. in the race between obenshain/herring. herring the democrat lead by 106 votes out of more than 2.2

i have over 700,000 registered voters in fairfax county.t jurisdiction in virginia is virginia beach with 94 precincts and about 300,000 registered voters. so, any changes, any issues, any errors that we have to correct in fairfax county have a big impact on any of the statewide races. >> now, at one point in our coverage of the post election closeness of this race, i made fun of you on tv for insisting at first that there were zero, zero, zero missing votes, when, in fact there were several hundred, in fact, more than 3,000 absentee ballots that hadn't initially been included in county total. what was going on there and is that resolved to everybody's satisfaction on beneath sides of the aisle and both campaigns? >> that is resolved to everybody's satisfaction at this point, as far as i can tell. what happened, and i want to make clear, we did not have any missing votes in fairfax. everything was counted on election day. what happened was basically the perfect storm of errors in fairfax county, where we had a machine breakdown that resulte

if it gets higher up in fairfax county, like 40%, it is likely we won't win. well, tonight, in blue fairfax county, virginia, the republican secretary of the county elections board was live tweeting as the results came in. shortly before 9:00 eastern, he posted, we are at 44.3% turnout, we will probably hit plus 45%. virginia republicans were right. the lower the turnout in places like fairfax county, the better it would have been for their candidate. as it happens, though, that did not work out for them tonight. and ken cuccinelli did not win. joining us now is steve kornacki, the host of "up with steve kornacki." thank you for being here. interesting to look at turnout numbers, specifically in northern virginia. we saw an elector in virginia that looked much more like 2012 than the last time they elected a governor in 2009. >> what we saw play out tonight in virginia in a way was a repeat of election night in virginia in 2012, where in 2012, romney was leading in the state and all the returns that were publicly out there, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00, those big four so

. >> reporter: i'm peggy fox in fairfax. the attorney general's race hangs in the balance and here election workers are trying to figure out why thousands of votes may not have been counted. an emergency meeting was called after serious questions arose about absentee ballot totals, totals that didn't make sense. >> the discrepancies were first noticed by a staff member at congressman gerry connolly's office. >> we think there could be as many as 3,000 ballots that are not accounted for. >> reporter: 3,000 ballots could swing the outcome of the close attorney general's race which now has republican mark obenshain leading over democrat mark herring by only about 700 votes. >> basically due to human error which is what happens sometimes. there's potentially a few thousand votes at stake, so it could impact the election. >> reporter: connolly's staffer knew when people go to the trouble of asking for an absentee ballot, they almost always send it in. the return rate is usually close to 90%, but in the 8th congressional district

peggy fox is live in fairfax county. they are racing to certify 500 disputed votes. does that mean we are getting an answer tonight? >> well, actually they are not disputed. they are provisional ballots. they are ballots people fill out when they go to the polling place and their name is not there. they fill out the ballot and people are coming in to face to have their ballot counted. only 159 of those 500 came in and we may see about, maybe 300 of them counted. take a look inside at the room where it's all going to happen. it's filled with lots of media. they will be moving in three different optical scanning machines for the three different congressional precincts. that's how they count these votes. the ballots that are accepted will be put into those three different machines and we'll know how those people voted. it has been quite a drive, quite a push to get these ballots counted. >> the three member fairfax county lektorial board has been hearing from residents who cast provisional ballots election day because they weren't listed as registered voters. >> it's a
