after fairfax county resident john geer was shot and killed in 2013 by a fairfax county police officer, the department was virtually silent about the incident for 17 months. not even geer's family knew what happened the day their son was killed. it took intervention from the u.s. justice department to get fairfax county police to go public in. an attempt to gain transparency this police practice was formed. >> pipe greatly impressed with the fact that we've -- i'm greatly impressed with the fact that we've been allowed to go the directions we want to in general. >> i'm not seeing progress. >> reporter: mike curtis, president of the virginia citizens coalition for police accountability, is talking about an incident that happened nearly two months ago but made public only this weekend. fairfax county police were called to the apartment of iraqi war veteran alex wharton for an intruder. wharton said police responded with guns drawn at him. the chief responded saying we must insure all calls are conducted in a fashion which is consistent with preserving the safety of all involved, but that

fairfax police are saying this is not so cut and dried? roz: the fairfax county police say a they were responding to a call for service. the veteran is asking why the officers had to respond to guns drawn without asking questions. the story is creating controversy and prompted fairfax county police chief to respond on twitter. >> my risk of violent death went up hundred percent that night. roz: sunday morning, june 14, he said he was asleep in the model unit of his alexandria apartment building while his unit was being repaired. a neighbor thought he was a squatter and called the police. he woke up with three fairfax county police officers with guns drawn. >> they swept from the inside with their guns drawn, their bills aimed at me. one of them handcuffed me with my face down. roz: he eventually convince the officers he was supposed to be there and they let him go. he wrote about his experience on social media and an op-ed piece for the washington post. in a surprising move, the fairfax county police chief posted a statement on twitter say

this is running through central fairfax county south of 66 over the last hour. it's gotten a little bigger. this is just south of clinton over 301 and the other storm is about to exit into the bay. this storm south of fairfax, talk about rainfall rates impressive, over 4 1/2 inches. that may be overdone, but i think needless to say if you're in burke now, you are getting dumped on in terms of rainfall. it's moving right across the southern part of the district. this is a pretty heavy storm in clinton. you may get hit twice. some heavy rain continuing into much of clinton down route 5 down toward brandywine and also pretty good storm still east toward mount calvert, rainfall rates about 1 1/2 inches per hour. we're keeping isolated showers and thunderstorms in through this evening. once they move out, that's it, but showers and storms develop again tomorrow by dawn, especially south and west of town. that could warrant a yellow alert. we will probably decide at 11:00 tonight. friday looks okay in the morning and then more afternoon thunderstorms, which is actuall

one of the fairfax county firefighters who made that rescue shared his helmet camera video. peggy fox has the story. >> reporter: fairfax county firefighters saved two dogs in a blazing house fire that destroyed the house. this is what the home looks like today. on july 19, this is what it looked like on the inside. firefighter ben sisson with wolf trap fire station 42 uses a helmet camera to review his work. he is glad he noticed what he was stepping on in the basement that day. >> i stepped on something soft. i discovered it was the dog bed. i reached down and felt the dog laying there. the dog was awake and breathing. i informed my officers, i found a dog i'm going to take it out to the front yard. >> reporter: the fire became too dangerous. firefighters had to evacuate. but firefighters from the burke station later rescued a second dog, a third dog died and the house is a total loss. how the fire started is a warning for anyone who might be staining a deck or furniture this time of the year. it was started with linseed oil soaked rags that were left on the back porch in

gentleman no criminal charges for now a high-profile fairfax county inmate death.'m scott macfarlane at the live desk. police announced they completed their investigation into natasha mckenna's death inside the fairfax county jail. mckenna was shocked with a stun gun multiple times while shackled as she resisted efforts to move her from her cell during a jail transfer february 3rd. five days later, she died. fairfax county police now turning the case over to the common beth's attorney to determine if any criminal charges will be filed. and medical examiner's report previously ruled mckenna's death was accidental. important to note here that the sheriff's office is in charge of the jail, not fairfax county police. we will keep following the story but for now, at the live desk, i'm scott macfarlane. >>> a developing story in prince george's county tonight where in the last hour, police have announced an arrest in a deadly stack. >> the victim found outside in an area where folks have worked hard to make their communities safer. county bureau chief tracee wilkinsness
