fairfax county police say they were conducting two weeks of surveillance on edmonds, tracing him to this potomac maryland neighborhood on lake potomac drive. both fairfax and montgomery county police observed him breaking into two cars, one of which belongs to bob cliffford's son. >> this guy was sneaky. it was a stormy night, this was thunder and lightning. >> reporter: after those break-ins, police arrested edmonds thursday morning. in the last several months, investigators say he's been responsible for more than 100 home break-ins in northern virginia. the serial burglar picked wealthy neighborhoods, had a pension for designer purses and in some cases bypassed guard dogs. >> he was very brazen, obviously, very quiet, very stealth oriented. >> reporter: chief rohrer says a fairfax county res dents helped solve the case when they noticed a suspicious vehicle. that led police to question edmonds on a traffic stop. during the questioning, police found handwritten addresses of places that were hit. that's when they identified him as their suspect. police let him go, but from that point on,

again, fairfax county does plan to charge him also with the burglaries here in this county themselves say they hope to charge him very soon. reporting live from fairfax, darcy spencer, news4. >> go ahead. >> i'm wondering if they're giving you a sense of when they might charge him in fairfax. >> reporter: i interviewed the chief of police. he said he didn't want to give an ect time frame. they're still working the state attorney's office. as you can imagine, it is a huge case. we're dealing wth more than 100 crime that have been happening since august. some are crime where the suspect has gone into home when people were slping. in other cases, he's broken into vehicles. all of this happening in the dead of the night. they have to piece this all together and make sure they can actually prove that he was t person responsible for all these crimes. if you remember during the course of this investigation, there were no witnesses. no one actually saw him committing these crimes. there was no description of him or the vehicle. so police have a lot of work to do to try to actually piece toget

at this point, he's charged with burglaries in montgomery county but fairfax county investigators believe he's connected to a string of burglaries in their county and there could be more charges to follow. the fairfax county police first started to follow him after a citizens called in a suspicious vehicle. >> i have to credit a citizens that was alert and an early- morning hours of november 8th, one of our streets in fairfax county. my officers went and handled it well, and we developed the suspect as a result of that call in to us. >> reporter: all right, tonight, edmonds sits in a month dorm -- montgomery county jail. the bond is set at $425,000 faces more than a dozen felonies, and several from a stolen gun. members of a special task force put together in fairfax county plan to come forward with their own charges soon. >> it sounds like police are saying the crimes were very similar no matter the location. is that right? >> and we have been covering these for months now. the same m.o. he went up to the homes, there was an open door and that is how he was able to gape access in marylan
