. >>> we just got new information on a deadly fire in fairlawn, new jersey. two died when the fire broke out at a group home there. the fire officials just held a news conference moments ago. news4's rob sha chmidt is in fairlawn right now. what are you hearing, rob? >> a space heater caused this fire in this chilly winter so far. we got to hear from an officer who we consider a hero who made a very clever rescue last night. the four women living in this group home on berkshire road were strangers to most in the area, but once neighbors saw the huge flames, they rushed to call 911. >> i worry, too, that the nature of the disabilities might have made it difficult for them to get out or caused the fire. >> reporter: the fire started around midnight. the home, operated by the alliance against homelessness, offers homes to people who struggle with disabilities. several police officers managed to get to the scene faster and officer john revetto was able to get to a woman on the ground floor. >> i pulled her out, she was trying to get her shoes. i said, i know it's

it happened in fairlawn. new jersey reporter toni yates is >> we learned at that police press conference one of the women in the house was actually able to dial 911. she was on the first floor. her roommates, all three of them, were on the second floor. the entire night shift of the fair lawn police department raced to the scene to try to find all those women. >> last night was a tragedy because we lost two lives but i firmly believe if it wasn't for the actions of the officers behind me, the fire department, oem, rescue, ambulance, it could have been worse. >> reporter: this is video of the fire that raced through the two-story house. it's what police officers who were the first responders on the scene faced with lives on the line. >> i knocked on the door real quick and i pulled on the door handle to see if it was actually open. it was. and she was standing right in the living room. i pulled her out. i said you need to leave. >> reporter: officials say the fire began in a second floor bedroom. two of the wo

"today in new york's" tracie strahan is there. good morning, tracie. >> reporter: darlene, good morning to you. now that the flames have been contained here, the bergen county prosecutor's office is actually on the scene going in and out of this home on berkshire road that we're hearing is a group home. we are working to confirm reports that two people were killed here just before midnight. want to show you some video now of the scene and the large response from neighboring fire departments. the smoke could be seen billowing out of a second floor bedroom. now we can see that smoke and we can also hear some victims being removed from the building there. even a rescue was reported from the roof here. now i reached out to the fair lawn police department. they do confirm that one of their officers sustained a minor injury trying to help in this effort. now a quick search of this shows that this is an address that belongs to the alliance against homelessness of bergen county. they call the
