doctor faisal khan the cdc -- he joins me now. dr.ahn thank you so much for joining me, i wonder if you can tell me what is your job as the county director in missouri. >> i've been in this position for a total of five months, i've been in this position previously for a period of four and a half years but i've spent the last ten years with this county public health in a variety. in the last 25 years across the world. >> what is the covid situation right now like in your county? >> it's going from bad to worse. as you mentioned cases are on the rise, pediatric admissions attributable to covid are seeing a sharp increase, and i know from talking to colleagues across the hospital systems in st. louis region that they are extremely worried as they see icu beds filling up, and a direct threat to the life of the very patients they seem to serve. >> that was what drove you and i think the others in the department to recommend this mask order, what was that room like to be in as you were there speaking to the county council? >> so, when i wal

faisal khan is the acting director of the st.is county health department who testified, and he joins me now. dr. khan, welcome to the shower. and thank you for making the time. give me a sense of what it was like in that room that night when you walked intthe council meeting talk about why you think a new mask mandate is recommended? what was it like in the room. >>hank you, amna. as a public official, it is my responsibility to respond and show up and answer questions posed by the legislative branch and elected officials whenever summoned. and so i went to the meeting armed with the facts and the information pertaining to the rationale and the urgency behind the public health order issued recently. and so when i walked into the room, i noticed a growing crowd with a palpable sense of unease and anger that was-- that was seemingly boiling over. >> and tell me a little bit about how that message went over, as you talked about the need for the mandate, what was the case you were making? what have you seen on the ground there that t

faisal khan, heckled and taunted, he joins us now.much. >> it's a pleasure. >> how did it get to the point where you would be assaulted and attacked in this ugly way? >> you know, i have to say that this is perhaps the latest symptom of the malaise that began in our country about 18 months ago when the pandemic first arrived on our shores. what was supposed to be a public health issue and emergency was heavily politicized at the federal, state and national level and we're seeing the latest symptoms of that erupt at a local level. more than 270 of my counterparts across the country have either resigned or been forced out of their jobs. and that is a tremendous loss to the public health workforce. i will say this, the st. louis area is an amazingly beautiful place. we have a great community, a loving, kind, gentle, kind-hearted community that takes care of each other. and so, you know, there are parts of the community that are experiencing an acute sense of frustration and fear over the uncertainty posed by the pandemic. and people inst

faisal khan, the director of st. louis county department of public health. dr.'s start with you. with slowing vaccine rates, the increasing spread of the delta variant, how would you describe the risk we're facing of potentially erasing some of the gains that have been made so far? >> boris, first of all, let's say that we have done a lot in this country to contain the virus and i think vaccination has really been the key to that. now, the problem is that you have areas of the country where there is significant vaccination and there are areas where vaccination is lagging. in the areas where there are people that is vaccinated, the delta variant is not a concern. so if you're vaccinated, i don't need to worry. the problem is in areas where you don't have a significant percentage of the population immunized particularly young people and in those places the delta variant is going to spread because it is highly transmissible, and it is going to infect a lot of the people that are not yet vaccinated or have not beenin fecked with covid. if you're protected just like
