this film is fantastic. congratulations. >> thank you. >> seth: such an interesting -- the jesse owens story is such a great story. >> yeah, it's fascinating. >> seth: a bit of a diparture for you, but this is a drama. obviously, there were funny moments in it, but was this a story you were familiar with before you played this part? >> only the headline. i don't know, were you -- did you know -- i mean, i just knew a little bit. jesse owens, black fella, won a bunch of gold medals in front of hitler during a big commercial for -- not hitler. i remember that from, like, a paragraph in a history book. but then the second i read the script, i was like, for me personally, i was like, "oh, i love the character they're asking me to play. reminded me of gene hackman in "hoosiers" or a character my dad would have loved to watch in a film, you know, when i was together. and he's still alive. i don't mean to make it sound like he's gone. [ laughter ] but, actually, i don't know. i haven't check my phone. [ laughter ]

[ laughter ] both of which are a big part of his story in the film. is it true you played him before in a previous film? >> yeah, actually i had about 15, 16 years ago. >> seth: oh, wow. >> richard linklater and i developed an idea of a jazz movie starring chet baker. it was going to be chet in the '50s, chet in the kind-of heyday of bee bop and the sense of his fame, but we couldn't get the money together. so, this never happened. >> seth: uh-huh. >> i felt really sad about it, to be honest with you. >> seth: yeah. >> i really wanted to play that part. and that ship sailed. and then, about 15 years later, the ship came back because of this older version of chet who's in a much more difficult place in his life. and i felt like i was given an opportunity to give a sequel to a film i never made. >> seth: that's nice. >> so, i like that. >> seth: yeah, there you go. >> it was cool. >> seth: and now, had you put done the work in to start learning how to play trumpet back in th

all these fantastic places. i took them back along with every other community that have been trained to deposit their all histories in this gigantic archive. kids from cal state long beach decided to collect their own oral histories. i gigantic wave of collection all over the united states. we collected a little over 800 oral histories. making it one of the larger repositories of what tino history. latino history. we digitized people documents. we scanned ids and photographs, anything people would bring in. what you find is that the archive has oral histories and is digitized documents. the other fantastic thing that came out of it is that the museum created a traveling exhibit bittersweet harvest. exhibit thatodest got a lot of attention. came fromny people these communities are were affected by them want to host this exhibit. i will show you what the page looks like. you can't see it that well. prize because a we were one of the best public history projects out there. name and youin a can listen to my uncle. y
