currently, the fare from oakland to reno is $43. los angeles to las vegas is 100 miles more, so the fare will probably be larger. on trips of more than 200 miles, amtrak cannot compete against the economy and speed of planes. amtrak does go through some nice territory, but the seats are uncomfortable, the sleeping accommodations are cramped and overpriced. the food is lousy. the reason why amtrak can get away with this is because amtrak's real constituents are not it's writers -- its riders. they are the people that vote to give amtrak subsidies. amtrak runs trains in 46 states in order to get political support from politicians in all of those states. its proposal under the biden plan would expand that to at least one more state. as bob said, we need to return to a user fee system, funding transit out of fares, funding amtrak out of ticket revenues. for highways, i really like mileage based user fees. oregon has a mileage-based user program. i am a participant in that program. if anybody has any questions about that program, i would
