fareed zakaria here, fareed, when president obama is sitting from president hu jintao, what is the mostmportant thing that the united states president wants to walk out of that meeting with? >> think more than anything else, president obama is trying to establish the kind of strategic dialogue with china where you can bring up things like the currency issue, you know the fact that the chinese use their currency to artificially keep their prices low. that doesn't get the chinese to storm out of the room. but gets them to do something about it. remember, china is now the second largest economy in the world. they're big boys. you can't brannish a stick and expect that they're going to jump. it's using pressure effectively with china, which means developing a relationship and making them that the united states is in there with them as a partner but we want to do things that are in our interest as well. >> and the question is, who has the upper hand in the interdependency if you will? chi china owns a lot of our debt. then again, china, its economy is struggling a little bit. inflation is up

earlier our fareed zakaria spoke to mohammed al aryan. >> we waited so long, there is no costless solutiony solution has collateral damage and unintended results. the question is not the cost, it's whether which alternative has the fewest costs. >> there's one powerful actor from whom we don't hear very much. that's the european central bank. couldn't they do a version of what the federal reserve did when we had our crisis and say we're guaranteeing everything. what that will do is make the markets stop trying to attack all these countries because they'll feel it's futile. would that work? >> the ecb like the fed, like the imf is a monetary institution. they can build bridges but they only build bridges. they need to be a bridge to somewhere and so far, the ecb has been a bridge to nowhere, not because of their fault, but because the others haven't stepped up. >> others meaning? >> the individual countries that need to step up reform effort, meaning germany that needs to decide how to strengthen the institution and private creditors who also have to contribute and carry part of the burden.

let's get some perspective from fareed zakaria from new york. fareed, let's begin in egypt. of this transition. what does it mean to have this country that has the educational, intellectual cradle of the arab world having this historic vote? >> it is incredibly important. remember these are the third elections that have taken place. you had them in tune tunisia, morocco and now egypt. egypt is the heart of the arab world as you described. you go anywhere in the arab world, the songs they sing are egyptian songs. the sit-coms they watch are egyptian. the movies they see are egyptian movies. and the political tlaends come to take over the arab world are the egyptian. so that even if you think about the two great political tlaends have come out of the arab world in the last 40 years have been arab nationalism, anise lammic fundamentalism. both started in egypt. so it's not too much to say that if egypt is able to successfully navigate its democratic experience, this too could be a political trend that will courses through the arab world. >>> and i spoke just moments ago to one
