joining us now, fareed zakaria, host of "fareed zakaria: gps." and a former u.s.dor to ukraine. and a senior editor at the new republic. julia, let me start with you because you have a provocative headline, excellent article in the new issue of the new republic in which you say these protests in kiev right now represent putin's worst nightmare. explain what you're driving at. >> so the last time viktor yanukovych was in power or the last time he was elected to power in 2004, it also triggered mass protests. the first time that the west heard about a place called the maydan was because he was elected in a fraudulent election. those protests that toppled him and brought in a pro-western government in kiev terrified vladimir putin. he really tightened the screws, killed off what was left of russian democracy, really clamped down on the free press on civil society, created this fearsome pro-kremlin youth group, and he sees ukraine not as a separate government but as an extension of russia. he told george w. bush once that, you know, you'll understand, george, this isn

fareed zakaria is joining me. at what point, if there is such a point, do you envision assuming the violence escalates, the demonstrators seem to be getting some groove, if you will, the upper hand. at what point would putin send russian troops into the ukraine, fareed? >> oh, i think that would be a complete disaster and i think putin knows it. what he's trying to do is exert his control and influence with very large offers of money. remember, putin has up to this point offered $17 billion. when you think about, you know, a country the size of the ukraine, that's an awful lot of money. i think he knows that if he would have sent russian troops into the ukraine, it would mean the end in some ways of russia influence in the ukraine. already there is a great danger that putin may have overplayed his hand. you know, imagine what the ukrainians are thinking right now about the way in which the russian government is supporting the president in his crackdown and you point out 100 dead, hundreds and hundreds more wounded

fareed zakaria, the host of "gps" is joining us. reed, to put it plubluntly, t is an extremely complicated situation that we're watching unfold, isn't it? >> it's extremely complicated. let's remember when we think of the ukraine, the western part of the crane that is the part that we've been hearing from, kiev, was historically poland or ruled by the hungarian but they were in the west. they wanted to just return to europe which is where they had been for hundreds of years. crimea was part of russia until 1954. so this really is when people talk about a divided country, it doesn't get more divided. you mentioned russian troops. remember, there are already russian troops in ukraine because russia's black sea fleet is located there. so russia doesn't have to send troops there. they are already there and they could be a lot of masked gunmen that are russian soldiers or in some way coordinating with russian soldiers. russia has so many ways short of invasion to be involved and to make trouble and in many parts of ukraine, though not the

. >> that interview was from fareed zakaria gps. our senior international correspondent nick payton walsh in kiev. nick, what is the u.s.'s role in this turbulent, political future for ukraine? >> not have much of a role so far. pretty absent in a lot of the protests. the european union until recently and particularly putting economic pressure on the ukraine. now, as you just heard, john kerry saying, look, stay out of this, russia. let them have their elections. but you said we're going to see some tug of war over this country still in the months aahead. we thought they made the decision back in 2004 and they slipped back, it seems, towards russia because of president yanukovych who is out of a job and what is their big statement going to be? we haven't heard much of one just yet. we have heard the u.s. national security adviser susan rice on television today saying, look, it would be a grave mistake for russia to get involved in this. clearly the west putting out the message saying, look, moscow, back off. they made their decision

and fareed zakaria is joining us. fareed, let's talk about security, sochi, the russians.lier with the chairman of the house homeland security, mike mccaul, and he told me this. listen. >> i can tell you the plot itself originated from the leader of the chechen rebel extremist umaraf. that's where this plot actually hatched out of. there have been reports that he's been killed since then but the plot has been hatched and it's out there. you have the suicide bombers within russia and there's a high probability that one of those will go off again. >> either using some sort of explosives in a toothpaste or suicide bomber. he says internally the russians are not cooperating much with u.s. intelligence. can the u.s. really trust putin right now? >> well, they can trust him certainly in the sense that he has to make sure that the games go off smoothly. it's very unlikely that he's going to do something that will in some way magnify -- the danger is that they won't ask for help when they could actually use a lot of the help, particularly the sophisticated technological help that
