anika khan, wells fargo senior economist is with me now from charlotte, north carolina.elcome back. good to see you. >> thank you. good to see you as well. >> even with the next bag, are the gains we are seeing in home prices reflective of and consistent with a housing market that is now gaining stability? >> really good question. today's report was a very good report, a solid report in the double digits. however, if we look at the 2014 number overall, it was disappointing and just a tad higher than what we saw in 2013. overall, new home sales activity. we do think 2015 is going to be a better year. >> let's examine the regional breakdown. a 54% jump in home sales in the northeastern u.s. demand was also up in the south by 18%. in the west by 3.1%. but in the midwest, sales fell by 12%. what factors led to that 54% increase in the northeast and that 12% drop in the midwest? >> on a regional basis, it is fairly difficult to look at the numbers on a month-to-month basis. however, stepping away from the monthly trend overall, the midwest as well as the northeast, are contin

same with wells fargo. remember how horrible that quarter was supposed to be? the stock is about to take out the level where it was when wells gave you the miserable report. turns out to be another buying opportunity for this great american bank. sometimes this reaction occurs even the same day. norfolk southern reported a quarter not as good as union pacifics last week which was a thing of beauty. the stock looked down at the open as it should have been but then it reversed and went higher anyway. why? the market is desperate for america first names. companies that do business here and have less foreign risk. they fit it perfectly. there was no rail line to europe. i don't know if the disk drive company can bounce back from its negative comments about disk drive promising when it reported it's am. but the stocks are cheap and if you wait a few days people forgot what went wrong. of course not all will be forgiven. united parcel was down for a second day because it stunk up the joint reporting a quarter that was marred by bad logistics. still i think the pile o

as that begins to move up that's good for we wills fargo. incidentally we've been producing at a high level while rates have remained low. on the longer end of the curve we're a little conflicted. our customers do better and so we're very happy in the mortgage market when rates remain low. we do have a big fixed income portfolio as well like all banks, where we deploy some of our excess deposits so that portfolio loses value as rates begin to rise although incremental investments become more attractive as rates rise. so in the interest rate environment we've been in, things have worked out very well for us. if rates begin to move up i think that's good for wells fargo as well and we can perform in either environment. i think mortgage borrowers would prefer if long rates remain low. >> two quick related questions on your energy exposure. one, i understand the head of your commodities business left a couple years ago. do you guys have a commodities business to speak of? >> we do. we have an energy hedging business. it's based in houston where
