this brings us back to fauci. as all political types do and let's call him that, because that is what he is, fauci is a baseball fan. it is baseball. he loves the nationals. so imagine fauci goes to a national game next year, full crowd and 40,000 people and many won't believe that fauci was the smartest individual in the stadium. that may well be true. but let's also agree that fauci's knowledge would be a microscopic fraction of the combined knowledge of the stadium. what i've just described for you is the free market place. markets work and they work brilliantly precisely because they combine the decentralized knowledge of everyone. it is not that the soviet union didn't have experts, they had brilliant people in power. and it is not that north korea and cuba don't have experts now. but whenever you substitute the knowledge of the few for the market place, you get crisis. and so this is what we get. politicians and experts said unless we take away your freedom, unless we lock you down, there is going to be a cr

anthony fauci. dr. fauci, thank you for joining me this morning.et your reaction to the milestone i just mentioned. 700,000 deaths happened over the weekend from coronavirus. and that number would have been unthinkable 18 months ago. what's your reaction? >> right. well, it is a very painful statistic, dana. obviously because of the enormity of the challenge of this outbreak and this extraordinary virus that spread so rapidly. many of those deaths were unavoidable but many, many are avoidable. were avoidable and will in the future be avoidable. the number itself is staggering. you're absolutely correct. but hopefully that will then spur us to realize that we do have interventions in the form of a vaccine to prevent infection, to prevent severe disease, to prevent death. so when you see a number like this, i would hope people would say we have a tool to not let that get any worse. let's utilize it, and i refer to something we bring up all the time, that we still have 70 million americans in this country who are eligible to be vaccinated who have not

fauci. dr. fauci thanks very much, dr. walensky. as you've heard from dr. walensky the extreme importance of getting vaccinated for covid-19. so what i thought i would do in the next couple of minutes is put a historical perspective upon what she has just said. namely what is the historical impact of vaccines in general, domestically and globally, to put it into the context of where we are now with covid-19. next slide. if you look at this slide, it is really striking. it lists the important diseases on the left that used to be extraordinarily important and impactful public health problems here in the united states. and in the second column is the estimated annual average number of cases prior to the vaccine for that particular pathogen. and look at the 2020, namely last year, reported cases of each of those diseases. the far right column shows that anywhere from 97 to a hundred percent diminution in the number of cases, purely as a result of vaccination. next slide. look at that from a different perspective, namely, what are the benefits in disease? so, am
