the fayette street employee is accused of opening more than 1200 greeting cards and stealing the gift inside. megan gilliland is live from the post office with more on how they caught him. good morning, megan. >> reporter: good morning, patrice over the past three months investigators say they were finding 20 to 100 greeting cards through almost every day. they launched an investigation and caught andrew walsh an employee here at the fayette street office in the act. according to court paper had been opening the greeting cards and stealing the co contents ine from gift cards to cash. the gift card never made it. >> i was angry. how could somebody steal from a 3-year-old. i'm sure they did not know how old my granddaughter was, but still the birth card said happy birthday 3 years old. >> reporter: it violates the public trust. i mean, the mail there should be trust when you send things through the mail. >> reporter: police arrested walsh on tuesday night at his home in cockeysville. while they were there, they also recovered more than 400 gift cards found inside of his car there. walsh

the information lead them to the night supervisor at the fayette post office.gators say he's worked there for about two years. it's upsetting i cannot buy a gift card and put it in the card and mail it for 44 cents. >> inside the car, investigators found 450 cards for everything from coffees, groceries and clothes. after several months, they found him stealing the cards. i thought, yes, they got him. >> so, that, if there's a crook in the post office, he won't open that particular envelope. >> now, investigators say he may have targeted brightly colored envelopes. the postal service had no comment. >>> it's not clear how much may have been stolen from the mail. >>> he's one of maryland's most powerful senators and this morning, he may be the target of another investigation. for the state prosecutors office is looking into the campaign money for personal use. they're talking about legal fees and online gaming. he's the senate budget chairman and at the center a. a federal investigation. >>> a long losing streak continues for the orioles and the manager isn't mr.

we have an accident at west cold spring road and east la fayette. back to you. >>> the latest now on that deadly shooting at the university involving students. the glen burney man accused of shooting two fellow student social security claiming self-defense. we're joined live in the studio this morning. >> good morning. students and administrators are trying to come to terms with grief and sadness after a deadly weekend shooting. now, 21-year-old tyrone hall is accused of shooting two fellow students with a shotgun early sunday morning. hall told police the man came to his offcampus home after an alleged assault on a woman that night. he shot both men in the stomach with a 12-gauge shotgun. 21-year-old ellis hart ridge of washington, d.c. is expected to recover. according to charging documents, hall says he fired in self-defense after both men lunged at him. hall has been charged at first degree murder and attempted murder. he's being held without bond at the allegheny detention center. they played basketball for the college. friends describe them as

indicated tornado right there at the bottom of your screen and we've got another warning here for fayette, pickens and tuscaloosa counties and this is again a doppler-indicated radar tornado. and we'll take you on up into northeastern parts of alabama, and this did have a history of producing a tornado with a little bit of damage. we don't know how serious it is, but we still have a warning in effect for marshall county. it does appear that that storm is starting to weaken a little bit so hopefully we'll see that to begin to expire. now i want to take you into the nashville, tennessee, area. severe warning. you can expect to see winds in excess of 60 miles per hour. and heavy downpours and lots of lightning. oh, there you can see it on our live lightning tracker as these storms to push eastward, we'll have to continue to watch them and see if they pick up any rotation but it doesn't look like that's a likely indication at this hour. now, we're expecting to see severe storms continue through the night tonight in this high-risk area in particular, the storm pushes towards the east and we'll

. >> reporter: good morning, patrice, we're along the fayette street post office where 51 year-old andrew walsh used to be the overnight shift supervisor that is until he was caught on camera opening up greeting cards and stealing the gift cards and cash that were inside. one of the victims this grandmother in harford county. in january chris mailed a birthday card to her 3 years old granddaughter in virginia with a $50 gift card tucked inside. later she received an envelope marked to sender to the postal -- from the postal service and she was told that she was a victim of postal theft. >> i will never send a gift card or a check in it. never, it's sad. >> reporter: investigators were able to track some of the missing gift cards ask discovered that the phone number used upon purchase was walsh's a postal employee here. police arrested walsh on tuesday night at his home at cockeysville. while at his home they recovered 400 gift cards inside of his car. if he is convicted, he could spend up toe up to five years d bars. no word on if he will have to pay restitution. >>> megan gilliland, fox
