that fdr never abandoned macarthur. he recognized him as a military genius. and in 1935, macarthur left active duty and got himself a cushy job. he went to the philippines as an adviser of the philippine military services. he became a field marshal in the philippine army. at that point was four times as much as general marshall was being paid to run the entire u.s. army. in 1941 before the war after pearl harbor, the war that looks imminent, fdr calls mcarthur back to active duty and gives him command of all american forces and all philippine forces in the islands. in those early months of the war macarthur is losing the philippines and is being driven back down the peninsula. he could have been left there. in fact dwight eisenhower believes that this theatrical history should be left in the philippines as he is going down to defeat the martyrdom.
