federal agency. trump administration has acknowledged hackers not only accessed but compromised federal agencies including the treasury department, the commerce department, department of homeland security and parts of the pentagon. "the new york times" reports the hack was engineered by one of russia's premier intelligence agencies. they report that other major entities who use the compromised software include the cdc, the justice department, a number of utility companies, nearly all fortune 500 companies and oh, by the way, los alamos national laboratory. not only did this russian intelligent unit get access everywhere, but according to the times the attacks had been underway as early as spring. meaning they went undetected for months of the pandemic and the election season. so how could russia defeat cyber security for so long? nicole is here to help explain it all. nicole, i have to say i'm completely fascinated by this even at a basic technical level. let's start with the method here which seems somewhat ingenious. there is a cyber security company called solar winds. who are they and what do they do? >> so solar winds for years was known as a network monitoring company. it was used by it administrators to find out w
