i believe that the agencies that we allegedly are redundant are of are the federal trade commission. but unlike the federal trade commission, the cfpb has supervisory authority over banks with $10 billion or more. and and any entity that we supervise. so we can go in and work with them on an examination before there is an enforcement action filed. and sometimes there just is not an enforcement as a result of being able to solve something in a supervisory capacity. in addition, the ftc is focused on, um, what businesses are doing, and sometimes that overlaps with how a consumer is impacted. and then we figure out among the agencies who will prosecute that case. i think the other agency that we are allegedly duplicative of is the sec. i did securities fraud litigation for nearly seven years. it's not the same. you're protecting investors when the stock price is impacted. the cfpb is the only agency that is on the consumer's side 100% of the time. that's that's our marching orders and that's our mission. really, the only thing that we overlap in is the ability to regulate some of the ver

things i'm curious about is, many think it is going to be friendly when it comes to the federal trade commission. what do you think that bodes for technology? fiona: if we do have a sense that there is reduced regulation we know that could be really beneficial for technology. i think it is a really interesting idea, especially when we are considering what regulation there might have been with regards to big tech, with regards to this idea of ai as well. i think that is still very much an open subject of where regulation may have been. the fact that we could be looking at a future of decreased regulation is definitely a positive for many stocks in the tech area. also could be outside of the tech area as well. caroline: one of the names you have been field -- what are the names you have been fielding the most calls on? fiona: that is a good one. obviously nvidia. nvidia has been hugely in focus because of those levels of volatility we have had. tesla has always been very popular among clients as well. but heading toward this week amazon and alphabet are the names that have been up there with our c

securities and exchange commission, the sec, the federal communications commission, the fcc, the national labor relations board, the nlrb, as well as the federal trade commission, the ftc, all of these agencies are just some of the examples of independent agencies that congress set up to have independent authority. and yes, they have presidential appointees, but the nominees who serve on these boards span from president to president. they do not serve directly for one individual administration. so this is something now that clearly is something that president trump is using and wanting to flex his executive authority. we've seen it on so many decisions already this year. many of them have been lawsuits have been filed and judges are weighing in on them. but it is one more example of how the president is really trying to remake what we sort of view as the modern day government, challenging the idea that it is congress that has control of the purse strings. and one more point on this executive order. it also has a provision in there that that simply anything that one of these agencies does has to be approved through the white house. so again, taking t

some of these nominally independent agencies that fall under the executive branch, like the federal trade commission or the fec, where you typically see a president nominate a person to take over or persons to take over for these commissions for some period of time and then take a more hands off approach as those agencies go about their work. this executive order, this memo essentially says these agencies are going to appoint are going to work through the. white house, through the executive, and that they can't take positions that are contrary to what the white house believes. this goes. hand in glove with musk's theory here that the bureaucracy ought to report directly through donald trump, you know, exact only his will essentially in doing what they do. how this shows up in the day to day workings of these agencies. i think we're only going to find out over time. and i think we're probably going to find out in the form of lawsuits that will be filed when these things clash with the expectations of how these agencies are run and the duties that they have to perform around the country. >> all right,

agencies that do regulations as it relates to trade, the economy, communications, including the federal trade commission, the federal communications commission, the securities and exchange commission, all things, again, that have traditionally operated independently from the executive branch. now, to get to my point about how all of this is really going back to, you know, donald trump's efforts to really give more power, expand the power of the executive branch. we kind of heard him, you know, suggest some of this while signing this executive order yesterday. take a listen to how he put it. >> don't forget, i got elected on the basis of making our government stronger and smaller because we have millions of people that obviously they're paying millions of people that shouldn't be paid. >> now, kate, also, just to get into some of the nitty gritty of this order, you mentioned some of this, but it requires that independent agencies submit their proposed regulations to the white house, specifically to ensure, in part, that this aligns with the president's overall agenda. it's similar to what we've seen with

according to the federal trade commission, people lost more than $1.1 billion to romance scams in 2023e scammers used a variety of tactics, including creating fake online personas, building up a romantic relationship, and then eventually asking the victim to send money for some sort of emergency. for more on this and how it all works, we're joined now by patrick ha from next, a cybersecurity firm. patrick, thank you for the time. it's good to see you. so explain how do these romance scams usually play out. >> so as you described, we're obviously in the love season for tomorrow. and typically around this time you'll start seeing fake profiles put up on dating sites and or on facebook, instagram, etc. and they're really trying to prey on lonely people. get them to click engage and then start that romance scam. >> and you know, how do we keep an eye out for some of these online personas that are likely to be fake? what are the red flags to look out for? >> yeah, you'll you'll see. again, i've seen these even on linkedin and other apps that that people commonly use. you can kind of tell so

so, according to the federal trade commission, in 2022, almost 70,000 people reported being victim ofake part in so-called love bombing now, in this case, this is when a person quickly professes their love to you and then asks for money. there's something wrong with that. we'll talk about that later. right? they will use some excuses not to meet up, which is never a good thing. or even do a video call randolph barr with the security company sequence in santa clara says the scammers are even using a.i. to create deepfake photos. you can actually take ai and target multiple people in different parts of the world. and what i mean by different parts of the world is that ai also has a different type of tooling to be able to create multiple languages or content from for multiple languages, so broadens the attack surface for a lot of these scammers. okay, so barr says to protect yourself, be sure to pay attention to the conversaon that you're having with that person. trust your gut and also be wary if someone is asking two personal questions. there. you look really nice. what's your social s

the country's major trade, communications, financial regulatory regulators, including the federal trade commission, the federal communications commission and the securities and exchange commission, among other agencies that you can see up there on the board, all of these, again, that were designed to operate separately from the white house. and just to give you a little context as well, what some of these agencies do, i mean, they were designed to protect american consumers. they regulate banks, stocks. wall street more broadly, but also have the power to impose fines on companies that don't follow suit with some of these laws. now, i do want to read for you just a line from this order that i think kind of perfectly kind of sums up what this is trying to do. it says, quote, for all for the federal government to be truly accountable to the american people, officials who wield vast executive power must be supervised and controlled by the people's elected president, essentially, kate, this this line in this order and what we know it's trying to do is just the latest example of the president, but also

. >> supporters of the proposed california law are responding to a report from the federal trade commissionsinesses in california and nationwide are using private personal information to set up individualized prices. >> valentine's day is this friday, and the fbi is warning that romance scams are on the rise, both in the bay area and across the country. the fbi reports victims investigated by the agency's san francisco division lost $27 million to these scams in 2023 alone. agents warn the scammers first go online to gain the victim's trust. the focus then shifts from love to money. >> the biggest red flag is whenever the conversation turns to money in any way. so whenever there's an emergency that has happened or a somebody is in sick or somebody is, you know, looking to offer some kind of investment. >> one woman in france says she was recently targeted in what's being called the brad pitt romance scam. she says a scammer used both ai generated images of the movie star and emotional manipulation to cheat her. out of $850,000. >> well, thousands of employees are being handed a pink slip to

a new rule from the federal trade commission that goes into effect in may will require companies to cancel a subscription just as easily as signing up, so you shouldn't have to jump through hoops to cancel. >> after canceling subscription. keep an eye out on your bank or credit card statement. if a company keeps charging you anyway, file a dispute with your bank or credit card company. >> and review your paid apps. check your active subscriptions in the app store or google play store and cancel any you no longer need. it is an easy way to cut costs and save money well into the new year. and remember, if something feels off like a subscription you don't recognize or a renewal notice asking for personal information, it could be a scam. be careful. don't click any suspicious links or share your financial details. >> coming up, san francisco's new superintendent has laid out a plan to balance a multi-million dollar budget deficit. the jobs on the line and reaction from those who will be impacted, and the recent plane crashes in america have left several people grieving the loss of loved ones.

government, the national labor relations board, um, the securities and exchange commission, federal trade commission, all these so-called independent agencies have officials that can't be removed by the president if the law changes, if trump wins this case, all those people could have their jobs at risk. >> there's actually a good precedent on that. there's actually precedent from 2020, the supreme court ruled that the the cfpb, the consumer financial protection bureau there set up was unconstitutional because it didn't it involved all the power in one person. the office of the special counsel is set up the exact same way. and again, this has been in dispute really, really since the dawn of the republic. you can go back and read the federalist papers, and they talked about how much authority should the president have to execute laws? could congress tamper with that? so this is really a long term constitutional debate, and it's appropriate to go to the supreme court. >> it shifted largely or most quickly. i would say, over the last few years, but it has been something that's been discussed for some t

and of course, with election of president trump, that means we get new heads of the federal trade commission and the securities exchange and things like that. so when it comes to the threats that you describe in the book, are a lot of these trends already on their way out the door? well, i think that we're starting to see the pendulum swing, but they're definitely not on their way out the door i think that really anheuser-busch that was the straw that broke the camel's back. and that was an eye opening moment for, i think, of corporate america because prior to this, you saw companies that were getting involved in social and political issues. you saw the nflx had gotten involved in sort of the players were kneeling and the blm movement was big for the nfl. but when you're the nfl company or customers have anywhere else to go, you can say you're going to boycott the nfl. but if sunday afternoon and you want to watch football, you don't really have other alternatives. so last year, the super bowl was at an all time record high, whereas on the in even in disney was another one, disney got involv
