so i started fedex as an i.t.ntern through inroads and then of course 17 years in the field of i.t. with fedex and then ultimately switching over to h.r. and my current role as vice president. and i started with that story simply to say that it took the education system, a nonprofit to reach out and connect, and then the private sector to reach in and sponsor, and that created, it connected me with the possibility of being here today. and when i stepped into this role, about two or three years ago i had the opportunity to attend the tech higher summit in baltimore where there were young minorities and individuals from underserved communities who were participating. i walked up and missing some of the robots that had been created and there were two young gentleman having a conversation about the robot being able to talk -- toss a a ball seven fet into a bucket. and one of them, his robot was tossing it past the bucket. then i walked up on the conversation and the conversation went something like, yeah, your diagram

i hired you into fedex future. let's start working on coaching for the personal goal for opportunities we have today and into the future. let's create the pathway into those positions that do pay higher and we keep that talent within. >> are you saying that maybe you're not just as much as you're focusing on what is the opportunity and is this something where there is going to be focused and pull it before? >> go ahead. >> just to add on that, going to your second question, one of the reasons that we're investing so much in upscaling our folks, whether they say they're with us or not, we think it will help us attract people that are interested in that growth opportunity. some people may stay with us and want to be store managers and people may also view it as a springboard to opportunities elsewhere. so that is quite deliberate. we also believe that the sector as a whole needs to improve. that will create a stronger talent base. one of the studies that we funded through the walmart foundation with the national skil

we'll be hearing some familiar names from you starting with fedex. >> yes. a c grepany they're very well positioned and there's a number going on, and ups and one of its main competitors is struggling a little bit. they're facing the union crisis and you have president trump waging a war against amazon which may drive business away from the u.s. postal service to fedex and ups and overall you're seeing a lot more shipmen goi from online retailers and that, of course, benefits all shippers. so we like fedex. it's a strong balance sheet. it's g good growth prospect. the dividend is somewhat low, but we think it will rise over time and that makes the stock attractive to us. >>>>pi secon is apple, rising dividend and stock buybacks, as well. >> enormous amount of stock share buybacks. as a matter of fact, on that note. first quarter saw the largest amount of share buybacks in story across the board for s&p 500 constituents and technology ledhe way therelmost accounting for a third of all share buybacks. apple hasnnnced significant share buybacks. it's announced

what matters, how do i as a worker get the job at fedex, what are those credentials that are going to make me get the job? we have been supporting a program called credential engine which is a database, which helps people understand not only here is the litany of credentials that are out there, but also trying to help zoom in and figure out here are the ones that are most valuable, and particularly towards the pathway that i am most interested in. one of the other things that we have learned is that sometimes people need to understand that there are people like me who could be in a job like that, so how do you connect those real human interest stories through the actual credentialing behind them, so people can understand that this is a pathway that is not abstract, rather it is accessible to someone like me, and i could figure out how to get there? >> there are a number of people in this room who are working on these issues, that is why they're here. we are also funders of credential engine. we have gone from 1000 flowers blooming, to some organizations regarding, we have a long way t
