start with feinberg. apparently had a four-hour meeting with the man who was hired to explore a victims fund. what did he tell you. >> good afternoon, gerri. glad to be back with you. he wanted to understand the parameters cases that i have. he was serious about trying to get to the bottom how significant each one of the damage models were. we discussed generally you know, what it would take to try to get these resolved. it was clear that the meeting from ken feinberg's standpoint was preliminary. i'm not sure if, you know, if he will ultimately be the mechanism by which my clients discuss with gm any potential settlement but -- gerri: you put a lot on the table there. let's break it down just a little bit. >> okay. gerri: feinberg himself said he was just there to listen. but you were there pretty much to present your case and put dollars and figures on the table, sounds like. the amount of compensation your clients, i believe some 50 families, are asking for. did you have the sense from feinberg that th

feinberg, we do things with a handshake down here." said, "that's fine, but a handshake won't get you compensation." >> pelley: why is it so important to hold everyone to that standard of proof? >> feinberg: because there'll be another catastrophe, and a catastrophe after that. what happens the next time, in terms of a company's willingness to do something similar? >> pelley: feinberg has long experience. he ran the compensation program for victims of 9/11. in the bp disaster, he told us there were often two kinds of applicants, the deserving and the devious. what was the most outrageous claim you got? >> feinberg: i think there was a fellow in oslo, norway, if i remember correctly, who slipped on the ice while he was filing a claim and sought damages for a broken leg. >> pelley: people saw money and they tried to get it. >> feinberg: human nature-- goes with the territory. i think that if you had any type of compensation program anywhere, you get a fair number of people who try and game the system to try and recover compensation. >> p

gary feinberg: quite often i will see a patient that's been referred to me by another doctor. i'll have a pulmonologist-- a lung doctor-- who will send me a patient who has asthma, and the pulmonologist wants me to assess whether or not the sinuses are causing the asthma problem. and after assessing the patient, getting the radiological studies, and determining that there's sinus disease, then i call the pulmonologist, and i call him on the phone or i call her on the phone and say we have this problem. the patient's going to need surgery... the patient will need to be in the hospital for a couple of days because of their lung problem or asthma. we work together as a team in taking care of the patient. this kind of coordination helps patients navigate the medical marketplace. it is particularly critical for anyone with a chronic condition. laura mosqueda: it's scary to be faced with a disease that might go on for 10, 15 years, where there really isn't hope for somebody getting better from it. then i think we need to provide ongoing office visits in terms of availability for peo
