that was felt from l.a. to las vegas. the early indications it was once again felt in las vegas. we want to get out to our correspondents from southern california. with the latest. sarah cider in l.a. >> i'm inside of something that people do love to do on friday here. whenever the dodgers play. they are here in the stadium at l.a. we are about more than 150 miles from where the epicenter is in this particular quake. and you can feel the entire area. everybody in the stands felt it. for just a second the game was stopping for a minute. the fans cheered their way through it. this is strong and they felt it. the reaction wasn't fear. people started to cheer when it was over. it lasted a few seconds. it felt stronger than the first one on thursday. i experienced that inside the office. that caused our 15th floor building to sway. and caused light poles outside to sway. it's being felt. but seeing that the initial reading was a 7.1 estimate. that's a large quake that can cause a significant damage. now it's downgraded to 6.9.

but all the way in las vegas and they felt it. santa barbara felt it, pasadena felt it. this was large enough for people across california and even into the next state to feel this. it gives you some idea of just the strength of this and what it can do. now we need to find out what is happening at the epicenter. we will sure get some pictures in here shortly. that is a picture thereof los angeles just a few moments ago. and you see that camera on the top of our building shaking and it did go on for some time. the longer they go on, the more damage there can be. a lot of people trying to figure out what is happening there in ridge crest, and we will certainly get those pictures in soon, brooke. >> keep working the phones. i'm sure lots of folks are being called assessing damage there. standby, thank you very much. we want to go into some more affiliate coverage there live in los angeles. let's dip in. >> i didn't do that. i just maintained my coolness and to get everything into perspective since i was just waking up. >> reporter: and we were speaking earlier. you also exp

all the areas on the map that are color coded are where people reported they felt the e felt very lightill, look at all the reports that come in from the south bay. san jose you are at the heart of it but it wasn't only down here in san jose. reports coming in from people on the other side of the golden gate bridge up in marin saying we think we felt light shaking. it wasn't significant. there's no damage here. but if you think you felt something last night at 8:19, you are not alone. you can see that from the map. here's the start of the day. doesn't this look like a typical beginning for us in early july. we have got plenty of low grade clouds coming in through the golden gate but as we look farther inland that's the view over the trivalley. that's the camera over dublin and, yes, there is low stratas here, a little bit of the marine layer gotten in and it's mixing with some smoke coming in from the wildfire burning off to the east of the bay area. the sky looks like a mess. we are going to get rid of the low grade clouds and should start clearing out some of the smoke today because t

they felt the jolt, and then they felt the floor roll. and so that is exactly what you're hearing happened at the epicenter as well in ridgecrest where people, of course, felt it far stronger than we did here in los angeles. but for long time angelinas, those who have lived here their whole lives this is for a lot of people the strongest earthquake they've felt. and sometimes you get these, it's a jolt and then it stops and you're not even sure if it was an earthquake. this one was very clear and apparent. i can tell you looking out -- some of things on the walls started to move, but looking out onto the ground here these light poles were definitely swaying just slightly. but there's no damage that's been reported so far here in los angeles. we are hearing in the san bernardino area there's been potentially rock slides there and some cracks in some buildings there. we need to mention we're about 150 or so miles away from where the epicenter was there in ridgecrest. and i think those in ridgecrest are experiencing a number, at least 58 con

what it felt like? >> just further down the street from here we were getting a bit to eat and there was an aftershock. you can kinda feel it rumbling inside the restaurant spend a few people in the restaurant sort of cheered like we made it through this within a few minutes later, that's when the big one happened that 7.1 or 6.9 , whatever they're calling it now. a very powerful earthquake. the whole building started to shake, i don't know if we could even play that audio from that video, i think if there was a time to play that, you could really get that sense of panic because people were trying to get outside because this is a restaurant that had several grills that we're firing off yo have gas lines, always a concer up ruptured gas lines. once we got outside, everyone was just trying to collect themselves people were out of breath, for some people this ma be the first time they've ever been so close in their minds to may be losing their life or being injured and you can see people on the ground just

and now you may have felt the shaking right here as well. nbc bay area sergio quintana was there on ridgecrest when the shaking started. >> one of the biggest concerns in this continuation of the earthquakes is the sustained damage to buildings. and now we were here earlier in the day, and we did not see this at the dollar tree store, and this crack formed in the big earthquake that we just experienced along with the crack in the wall, let me show you, a broken window that happened as the quaking was happening. that ladder there by the way is from the contractors that are right now assessing the damage inside. i wanted to show you that they are actually going through the store, and you can see how there is so much debris inside. we did see some of that, but this smashed down wall, that is new. that plaster there on the side. that is the new damage from just tonight. this was a sustained quake that we were actually right in the middle of, and we were trying to shoot some video for some of our reports, and let me show you some of the damage. t

i think that's how everyone in this community felt when they felt that 7.1 quake. it was undeniably powerful. it was undeniably jarring and scary. even for people who prepare for earthquakes in this part of the country. even for people who have experienced earthquakes before. there was power for this. it was prolonged and it was frightening for all who experienced. yes, i think you're exactly right this will be a sleeps night for many. there are about 130 people who have gone to shelters to spend the evening. we heard the mayor say that she expects many people will be sleeping outside of their homes, in the yards. she's urging caution for all of the cars out on the roads looking around and responding to emergencies. she wants everyone to be aware of the fact that there's so many people afraid to be back in their homes that they're choosing to be outside tonight. for many, that may be the safest choice. we are still expecting many more aftershocks. there have been dozens tonight and hundreds and hundreds since the first quake hit. there are reasons for people to tak

and since the 7.1 hit, we have felt inciden doz felt dozens. so this is a reality and every time you feel the ground move, it does crontribute to the frayd nerves and that sense of anxiety that so many are feeling after what they experienced thursday and then again tonight. the key part here is that the emergency response is in full force. we had seen a fire, we had seen heavy smoke near where we were, we had smelled gas. those are issues of major and critical concern of course. those are being prioritized right now. we have seen a few emergency vehicles go by in the last half an hour or so, but it does seem that some of the emergency calls are subsiding which would indicate that they are getting their arms around the situation. but basically we've been operating in the dark all night. the power was out until just a few minutesing a go ago in the we're in which means that you won't be able to see the extent of the damage until the morning. >> and sleeping outside, that is disconcerting without having any light around you for those in neighborho

but the fact they felt it all the way in las vegas, they felt a shake or tremor is significant here.s a muderately strong aek, it can do damage. and now we're hearing there is damage in ridge crest according to one hotelier there. for people who have never experienced this it's unlike anything else. hurricanes, you get a forecast hurricanes are coming. earthquakes, not so much. there's some technology out there that'll give you sometimes 10 seconds. japan has great technology to give you time to take cover. but here in the states that's somewhere in between. you all of a sudden feel the ground moving underneath you or if you're a building like we are and you're elevated you start feeling the building sway. there's a lot of concern in california in particular about building codes. there are a lot of buildings not yet up to code, a lot of old buildings they have to retrofit, and so this is always a concern. if something is not built to withstand a certain magnitude earthquake there can be extremely devastating damage. we've seen that before. obviously there's a lot of freeways here wit

this was felt across a sizable area but not felt in salt lake city or nevada. it was felt in fresno, los angeles and las vegas. again, as the expert up on seismology before me mentioned, this is not necessarily -- it wasn't the san andreas fault. it was another fault to the east. fortunately a loss populated area. many people live in ridgecrest but if this were 200 miles west or southwest, different impacts obviously tied to this. there's reports of a little more than 9,000 customers without power in southern california and more than half of them are in kern county. that's a concern. you can multiply that by 2 or 2.4 for the number of people add those addresses. we have some videos from the coast that shows in los angeles the pool sloshing here. a neat thing. this is described as a rolling motion in the ground due to the -- again, the slippage of the two plates here. so you can see the water is moving here. there's nobody in here to get the water moving. that was the result of the earthquake. 150 miles from ten center. there will be some cleanup. the weather is

what was it specifically that made this earthquake be felt so far away? rob is here to give us a few more details about that. >> it's remarkable when you think how far the area that was involved here. we have a map that shows while the quake itself occurred far away from the san andreas fault, it was two smaller faults along the airport lake fault zone. the magnitude is a 6.4 earthquake that released a tremendous amount of energy where you can see the strongest shaking at ridgecrest and 150 to 200 miles all the way from san diego into the bay are where as you mentioned, size mow graphs registered into the north bay as well. a quake of this size being felt across four states. utah, arizona, nevada, and california. it has to do with the magnitude. a 6.4 carries 125 times the amount of 0 as a 5.0, more of a regional impact. total's quake as more aftershocks continuing, generally 5.0 and lower. >> how the earthquake registered here in san jose. nearly 300 miles from the epicenter. seismologists say a warning center gave them almost a minute of a heads up, but

the beer's that are just joining us, tell us what you felt, what it felt like, how long it lasted, andhe panic you were able to film with your camera when you are out there. >> we were at a restaurant wrapping up our coverage on the earthquake on july 4th, and there was a strong aftershock compared to this latest one that hit and everyone in the restaurant kind of had the sense of, we've made it through this thing. then a few minutes later, it just opened up and everything appeared to the ground was shaking back and forth and i think the real feeling was that the building was going to collapse on itself. people started screaming, trying to get out, some people were falling down as they were trying to get out, some people started crying. aftershock after aftershock. this went on -- it's hard to tell how long it went on for when you're actually going through it trying to get to safety because you thinking about other things, but it ended up going on for at least a minute or so. and once we got outside, that is when we really started to notice little things that were impacting the town. t
