we have rachel ferguson with the weather picture here and elsewhere. >> we are certainly going to beeeling the effects of winter here in japan. not one, but three low pressure systems are effecting the country right now. it will result in a lot of precipitation and as you guess, most of it will be snow. an icy arctic blast coming in. we could see snowshowers making the way to the pacific edge. what we can expect is heavy snow accompanied by strong winds. that means low visibility where the snow is blown about. also at the northwestern coast, the waves could get high. rough seas here. in terms of the snowfall and what you can expect, anywhere you see in the red could potentially see another 90 centimeters of fresh snow in the next 24 hours. that is very significant. we already had record-breaking snowfall totals across much of the country this season. this is going to be another significant amount of snow coming down just in the space of 24 hours. even down further toward the west, about half a meter of fresh snow is expected. good news for the skiers out there. it can make life dange

rachel ferguson joins us with the world weather forecast. >> hi there, yes. it is certainly very gloomy. i suppose we have to be grateful for the fact that the rain has opped. very chilly, indeed, yesterday. we're caught rightown twn two systems. one soh where japan is going to experience the chilly rain. up toward the north, a very potent storm system is bringing another half meterf sw some parts of hokkaido. that will be accompanied by very strong winds. we'll also see winds up to about 83 kilometers an hour. that will be blowing and drifting about that snow. also the waves could reach 4 to 6 meters forhe northwestern coast. pretty intense system up there to the north. wever, if we check out what's happening on the mainland continent, things are looking fairly dry across much of the north. mongolia, northeastern china he, d the korean peninsula. precipitation, eastern china. toward the north, it will be turning over to snow. temperatures will be falling over theext couple of days here. however, from shanghai and south, it will be falling in the form of rain

rachel ferguson joins us with the world weather forecast. >> well, as you guessed already, catherine, it is going to be plummeting today across much of the country. cold air is taking a grip of much of northern parts of eastern asia and while the continent is quite quiet and clear up towards the north, in fact, these showers here in the southeast of china will be moving out as well, we will see temperatures descending as the cold air also descends down in towards parts of southern china, even hong kong going down to 15, 14 degrees in the next couple of days. while things dry in the southeast of china, we are going to see shower s blossoming in england, getting heavier into friday. the eastern flank and down in towards the south as well, cambod cambodia, most of vietnam, you're going to be seeing showers and more heavy rain for the philippines, this, of course, could be problematic because it has been ongoing for the past several days, if not weeks. particularly are going to be at risk for floods and landslides. last but not least, japan, starting to dry out today, but there is going t

. >>> rachel ferguson is up next with weather. >> hello again. a powerful winter storm has been hitting japan. and even though we're going to see it move away into thursday, what will remain is very intense wintry pattern. we know what that is, snow right along the sea of japan side of the country. let's see what some of the totals are now at, more than 4 meters in parts of aomori prefecture. up in hokkaido record break snowfall here as well. down towards the south, 2 1/2 meters, more than 2 1/2 in daisen, 153 centimeters there also. so we'll be looking at some extremely heavy snowfall this winter and not even really into february. the 1st of february, so a few weeks left to go of potentially heavy snowfall. now as you can see the next 24 hours shows more precipitation here, even coming across into the pacific side. we have been staying dry in tokyo. that will continue. the temperature will drop, though, into tomorrow, about 12 degrees today ahead of that system. tomorrow, down to about 6 once again. now, along with that heavy snowfall we have be

. >>> rachel ferguson is up next with weather. >>> let's take a look and see what the weekend has in store in terms of weather. if we flick forward to japan things are looking a little better now across much of the country. we're back to our usual wintry pattern which means the snow's going to be found along the northwestern coast. the pacific edge and also the west now looking dry and will be getting a little bit warmer, too. so high pressure is moving in to help to push out all that arctic air. very, very cold today across much of the country as we head into the weekend temperatures will be recovering even into tuesday we'll see tokyo's high getting up to 13 degrees, which is what we usually see around mid march. now also places like the korean peninsula, northern china, beijing, temperatures are improving over the weekend, but they will be falling once again at the top of the week. things are looking very dry here. just a few showers towards the south. nothing too heavy. there is some heavier rain coming down for parts of the central philippines. quite a few areas picking up more

rachel ferguson joins us now with the world weather forecast. >> hi there. yes, indeed, there is going to be the appearance of some snow across much of japan. from west to central location we have some precipitation moving in, and some very frigid air hanging around as well. that means snow even here in tokyo we can see some from the midnight hours in through wednesday morning. now in behind that we are going to see showers disappearing for the southeastern edge of china, but as you can see, they reapair pretty quickly coming in there. very short break then more wet weather for the southeast. as we head inland towards the mountainous regions in the southwest, of course, that precipitation will be snow. as for the philippines scattered thunderstorms and heavier rain for you in mindanao. in hong kong, a little chilly. you can see those greens spilling down towards southern china. we have 8 degrees in seoul but warmer air will help those temperatures to build getting 10 degrees for the high in seoul on wednesday which is 6 above average. 7 in tokyo, we also hav

rachel ferguson joins us with the world weather picture. >> well, we could see a few showers maybe in the late afternoon in tokyo. but if they come, they're probably going to be fairly light and move away quite quickly. at the moment, there's a system moving across western japan, coming into central portions of the country, but it is going to be as i say departing, heading further towards the east. there's another round of moisture on the way from eastern china. you can see it here. it looks like it is going to be intensifying tuesday. it is going to be maybe snow showers to the north, but heavy rain on the river on tuesday. to the north, fairly settled. a low pressure system is moving across from northeastern china. this is going to redevelop over the sea of japan, and then bring winter storm conditions to northern parts of the country. they will see high winds and waves picking up on the northwestern coast. towards the philippines, more heavy rain here. you see the purple in central parts of the eastern coast, showing you the heavier rain is on the way. this is an area that's alread

. >> rachel ferguson is up next with weather. >> hi there. welcome to world weather update. heading into eastern asia, large high pressure is going to be dominating the northern part of the continent here. so across mongolia as well as china, fairly dry. we do see a few snow showers making their way here in towards northern, northeastern china. maybe about five centimeters from this system coming through. other places getting some snow. japan certainly going to be seeing some very significant snowfall in the next 24 hours. okoruki should see 90 centimeters. almost an additional meter of snow. it is very, very heavy. other places towards the north toward hokkaido may be about 50 centimeters, but half a meter of fresh snow is possible. also very windy here, so snow drifts and avalanches are going to be high risk. and then along the pacific edge, staying dry here. that cold blast of air will keep things pretty chilly, even after the winds die down in the next 24 to 48 hours. through the weekend it is going to be a little bit cold, a little bit below average for this time of yea
