rachel ferguson joins us with the world weather forecast.achel, it feels chilly in tokyo this morning. >> hi, catherine, it does feel chilly. we're still in the middle of winter feels like right now. fortunately, we don't have any of the snow falling to the north of japan. we have been experiencing winter storm conditions once again across much of northern japan, and that has left about half meter of snow in some areas. already getting 48 centimeters in the last 24 hours. some areas seeing gusts up to 75 kilometers an hour, recorded in yamagata. you can see the forecast that the low is bringing the storm is moving away. that's good news. strong northwesterly winds bringing the chill will continue to impact northwestern japan. in the next 24 hours, there's still potential for another 20 to 30 centimeters of snow, some making its way to eastern tohoku, too. we will be staying mostly dry in the pacific edge of the country down towards the south, but yes, still a little chilly. much of the rest of the region isdry. korean peninsula through mongo

let's go to rachel ferguson to get the details on that. >> good morning, catherine. yes, we have the first tropical system of the season. it's moving close to southern vietnam at the moment, inching closer every day. it's moving very slowly at the moment. this is t. of course, you can see in this mass of cloud. it's really come together in the last 24 hours or so. it's moving slowly, 65 mile an hour gusts and it means that the heavy rain is going to come down in the same place over the course of several days. so as we head into the next 72 hours, you'll see the southern coast here is getting about 300 millimeters plus in the next three days. that's going to be some very significant rainfall. even after it makes landfall, which it's expected to do local time, that heavy rain will persist as it moves inland. certainly a very high risk of flooding and landslides. we'll keep you updated on this throughout the day. other areas in eastern asia here getting significant rainfall, you can see from eastern china back through and towards the south, some heavy rain here. thunder

rachel ferguson joins us with the world weather forecast. >> well, certainly was feeling like winter across much of central japan yesterday. we had some significant snowfall even here in tokyo, a couple of centimeters were accumulating. however, today's a completely new day and different story altogether. it's going to be feeling like spring, dry, and also getting pretty warm. tokyo looking for a high of 14 degrees today, which is a jump of about 10 degrees from yesterday. it is going to be a little wet down towards western locations, starting to see showers now, but again, rain rather than snow as we have those warmer temperatures. a few showers moving up that eastern coast of the korean peninsula as well, but again, rain, spring-like temperatures continuing here for the next couple of days too. as for the beijing area and northern china, you have a blast of cold air coming down, so this precipitation is going to be snow. we'll also see snow moving in parts of inland china here. it will be turning over to rain and some of it's going to be fairly heavy as well from southern in toward

rachel ferguson joins us with the world weather forecast. >> thank you. yes, some of those storms have just wreaked absolute destruction and i want to go to video to show you what the scene was like in illinois. on wednesday morning. this is harrisburg. the tornado ripped through at around 5:00 a.m. just causing absolute devastation as you can see here. cars, homes, stores as well. just completely torn apart. not only that, not only the structural damage, but unfortunately at least nine people have been reported dead from that storm. and also unfortunately i must say we are not going to see the end of this storm from that system just yet. if we take a look at our weather map, you can see, this is low to the north and then along the front is where the severe weather has been erupting. now, on your wednesday night into thursday, the severe area is quite wide. anywhere you're seeing in the yellow is where the thunderstorms are expected. within the red area, the, of course, most at risk locations. flooding rains potentially a threat as well as damaging winds,
