the epicenter of that quake was also near ferndale. it did kill two people and caused significant damage to the fern bridge. and you may also remember the earthquakes off cape mendocino in april of 1992. three strong quakes struck the north coast, the largest of which was a magnitude 7.2. that quake also caused a tsunami that reached the coast more than 350 people were injured as a result of that earthquake. for more on the quake, the tsunami warning, let's bring in our meteorologist, roberto gonzalez. hey, roberta. >> hi there, mike. boy, it was a very active day today, wasn't it? starting off this morning with many of us receiving the warnings on our telephones, and it was sure enough, a 7.0, i had to look twice at my phone to verify that, and we saw it hit 61 miles to the west southwest of ferndale in that yellow and orange highlighted area. so let's walk you through the timeline. as the earthquake did strike humboldt county. a 7.0. very powerful. 1044 this morning i immediately went to the usgs site and started looking for a tsunam

if fernbridge is closed, it is the only way out of ferndale. to my knowledge. ferndale. the fernbridge is currently open so it shouldn't be as impactful as it would be if that bridge is closed. but if they've had over 20 aftershocks up there, if that bridge closes and blue slides also closed, the people of ferndale are trapped. >> okay. and there was a gas leak at a school today too. tell me about that. >> we did have a gas leak at our local middle school. we had to send all the children home. i want to credit city staff and the fire department for their very fast response to that. shutting off the gas. we had no fires, nothing like that. and so the gas is now currently off until the leak can be assessed and fixed and make sure it's safe for everybody. >> how does this compare to the earthquake? also went to summer in 2022. quite a different story i guess, right? >> yeah, quite a different story. the earthquake of december of 2022 devastated this community. people always ask when is the big one going to be here? and for the people of rio del that earthquake was the big o

we spoke with a woman who lives up there in ferndale. was some damage there, you know, some damage to infrastructure. obviously, items knocked off shelves. what what has been going on here throughout the day and what happens in the coming days in terms of trying to assess the level of damage, potentially from this large quake? >> i think we've got a pretty good handle on the damage that we know now, because of we're in an urbanized area. so you're going to see the results of this no matter where it's at. if it were more remote, it might be a different scenario. they're taking actions to solve. we saw some of the evacuations took place in hayward and santa cruz, some of those areas. for me, i think this was a gift from mother nature because it was a 7.0, which can be very serious. loma prieta 6.9. look at the damage that did. different location, different time to your point earlier, but also we now know. okay, look, we can't take this for granted. and it doesn't take a lot to be prepared with your family. you should heed this as a warning

and primarily this area right here around eureka, all the way into ferndale.nd fortuna will continue to feel these aftershocks for days. coming up, heather, in just a matter of minutes, we'll explain more about the different plates and why this particular zone here is the most active earthquake zone in the entire united states of america. that's still to come. okay, thanks. >> so much, roberta. appreciate that. so let's talk more on the san francisco response to today's tsunami warning. and bring in newly elected state assembly member catherine stefani, whose district includes the western neighborhoods of san francisco and northern san mateo county. catherine, thank you so much for joining me tonight. tsunami warnings. they're not uncommon along the west coast, although they don't happen all that often. but this one seemed to cause some concern and confusion. do you believe this was handled properly? >> yeah. you know, i think that you can never be too safe and you don't want to be sorry in these type of situations. and i felt like our department of emergency

it was just offshore just a little west of ferndale. the way that earthquake ruptured, it sent its energy eastward and right up that river valley that you're in and a lot of the shaking in rio dell affected the structures there. >> reporter: i have heard from people here in rio dell. they'll say they know and can feel how the energy from those earthquakes which generally come from the same direction kind of bounce through the river canyon. it's a crazy thing to hear people talk about, but i guess that's sort of the way it works. >> yeah. these are seismic waves. it's like waves in a pool. these things will go through the soft sediments that you're standing on in town and behind you there's harder rock hills. some of the energy can kind of be reflected back. >> reporter: previous quakes have caused vastly more more damage. they have a photo of the market burning to the ground. so another year, another quake, only this one just a glancing blow compared to what the nearby fault can do. >> it's just amazing that within less than a minute al

damage is reported at the historic ferndale in ferndale city clerk says the city manager and police weredamage and schools across the bay here evacuated following the tsunami warning. sky seven was above oceana high school in daly city, where you see evacuated students assembled on a field. schools in berkeley were also evacuated as well as strawberry point middle school, tam valley at mill valley middle schools as well. now take a look at this. northbound traffic on highway one in pacifica was packed with cars after the evacuation warning. sky seven was overhead. you can see traffic snaked along the pacific coast highway for miles as folks heeded the warning to seek higher ground. while the beaches were mostly clear of people, it didn't stop surfers from going out there and being in the water, which authorities certainly would have said, please don't do that. we saw several surfers still riding the waves at linda mar beach in pacifica. police officers were in fact asking people to clear the beach until again an hour later, when it was determined that the tsunami was not going to happen.

continuing to keep a close eye on ferndale and petroleum. these are communities that are still filling the aftershocks right now and they will continue to feel them as we head into the evening hours tonight. right after these strong earthquakes happen. the first thing that the usgs reports as the aftershock forecast. right now, up to around 10:00 at currently. we still see a 99 chance of 3.0. >> i will toss it to chris emmons with the arcata police department. can you hear us? apologies, you are with the fire department. what is happening in the community right now? what are you telling folks who live there? >> i heard reports that it was 7.3. as far as our area, 60 miles from arcata, cal poly humboldt all the way up to an area south of trinidad on the coast. immediately, the tsunami warning came out. and i believe it just got lifted in our area. >> are you telling folks it's okay to go back to their homes right now? >> at this point i would say so because it has been canceled. >> okay. what about the damage ? do we see the structural damage

we saw big messes at homes and businesses in cities like ferndale and garberville, but no one was hurt, fortunately. of course, that quake triggered a tsunami warning for about an hour. that included the entire bay area coast. we saw people, maybe you, evacuating to higher ground in places like pacifica, the san francisco zoo and berkeley across the bay. here is the tsunami hazards map and from the state department of conservation that's what it looks like. yellow signifies hazard areas that could be at risk in an extreme tsunami situation. when you zoom in on the bay area, it covers more land area than you might think. it's not just the coast, even parts of the bayshore could be at risk in a worst case scenario. here's the question. how likely is that to actually happen? our kara st. cyr asked the experts. >> reporter: the day after a massive magnitude 7.0 quake off humboldt county, people in the bay area are rethinking their tsunami plans. thursday for a time much of the bay area was put under tsunami risk. the first thought was where do i go? >> what do we do if it does get to the l

the quake left a water main broken in ferndale, among other damage. newsom is activating the state's emergency operations center and says this proclamation will allow more resources to go where they're needed. >> that will allow us to provide more resources, provide some of our national guard resources as needed. access to state fairgrounds, waiving some contractual obligations for that part of the state. >> speaking at the southern border, the governor said that state officials are on the ground up in northern california working with local emergency teams there to assess the damage. all right, now to the tsunami warning that was triggered by this 7.0 tremblor. the alert went out at 1045 this morning. it lasted a little more than an hour, affecting beach communities from the california oregon coast down to santa cruz. ktvu south bay reporter jesse gary continues our live coverage. joining us from cowell beach in santa cruz with more jesse, christina, good evening to you. >> and it's been a beautiful evening of surfers riding the rolling waves here alo

i have had a chance to connect with multiple people in the california community of ferndale. this is about 2 1/2 hours south of the oregon border. it's a rural community, home to about 1500 people that as of right now are still very concerned. i got off the phone with a coffee shop owner, i could hear the tsunami siren in the background. she says her shop is potentially ruined as a result of this earthquake which happened about 40 miles off the coast, almost directly west of ferndale. another shop owner told me that the shaking lasted for about 60 seconds around 10:45 this morning. and that it was the strongest quake they have felt since 1992. that was one that caused significant damage in that small community. as of right now, what we're hearing is multiple reports of things falling off, causing damage inside buildings. some cracks forming in the walls. but not significant structural damage. everyone i have talked to from ferndale says when they walked outside, and they looked down the street, they did not see the same type of damage that they saw back in 1992. that said, th

. >> some damage was seen in ferndale.e walls of businesses throughout the area. some of those businesses boarding up their windows. the dollar general store there reports it's closed until further notice. the director of the u.s. geological survey says this particular part of the state is known as california's earthquake country, called the mendocino triple junction. >> that's a place where we have three major tectonic plates bounded by three main faults that that just arrive all in that area. so there's a lot of seismicity. and over the last hundred years, there's been about i think this was the eighth magnitude earthquake, magnitude seven or above that occurred. >> here's another view showing you the power of the shaking here. it was so strong it caused a cargo truck to rattle. a worker walked by in amazement. you can see him on the right side of your screen. just watching that truck shake. governor gavin newsom quickly issued an emergency declaration to provide needed help and services to areas affected by the quake. i

and ferndale, which is now registered as a 7.0. there was another one that was nearby at about 5.8 as well. and that has triggered a tsunami warning from the oregon border all the way down to davenport and santa cruz county. we have on the phone this morning, justin shaw from the san francisco fire department. and i would expect that, you know, about what people are supposed to do in the event of a tsunami warning let's get to higher ground, sir. that's exactly correct. and wow, wasn't that a jolt. getting that alert on our mobile phones from the weather service about the tsunami warning? yes. what? the national weather service is recommending with a tsunami warning is to move to higher ground and get away from the coast with an earthquake this large off the coast, there could be a displacement of water and we could see an increase in wave activity and a sudden increase in the tide. so if you are near the coast, we're asking that you follow the red cross and national weather service recommendations of trying to get at least a mile

the closest, tensely most effective town is ferndale, which is just to the north of sacramento, the statef california. as yet, we are not hearing of any reports of damages or significant damage or anyone being hurt by this earthquake. as you say there was a tsunami warning, and that doesn't always happen. when a tsunami warning is issued, people are ordered to get away from the coastline, they are potential -- potentially endanger. mobile phone notifications went out to that effect, but in the last few minutes the warning -- clearly the risk has been assessed and determined that a tsunami warning isn'tessary, which i think is good news for everyone concerned. it suggests there may not be any lingering damage after this earthquake. ben: we are looking at images, one is there on ocean beach in san francisco and another above the beach a little further to the north, we believe. talk about the response from the emergency services, because this is something they are always prepared for. what are the processes they will go through in terms of assessing whether there is any damage and what their

now, this is what it looked like in ferndale, just after the shaking stopped. you can see all the cans being knocked off the grocery shelves. the shaking could be felt hundreds of miles away. bay area viewers called in to our newsroom about the quake. this is in chico, about 200 miles from the epicenter. you can see the water splashing in that swimming pool. now, the earthquake also prompted a tsunami warning along the coast in san francisco. most people heard the alert on their phones, telling them to get to higher ground. the city did jump into action as well. cities rec and park department briefly closed a portion of the great highway, and then the san francisco zoo closed. also so staff could secure the animals and evacuate. we spoke to one man near the cliff house who got that alert. yeah, i got it on my phone. it's just an alert, you know, just a tsunami alert. and. yeah, it was kind of scary. you know, obviously, i'm sure everybody, everybody was a little bit scared when they got it, but i'm glad everything was glad. everything's fine, you know? the warn

many businesses in the small town of ferndale are operating as usual. after thursday's 7.0 earthquake, no major damage has been reported despite more than 100 aftershocks that followed. we are hearing from more people along the north coast who were in the area when it hit. residents up in humboldt county said. could have been much worse. >> i was really we were all really scrounging for good feelings. i feel like two years ago and just trying really hard to make sure it was still nice, but i already feel a lot better this time around. >> it was very surprising, very little. like structural damage. there were like knocked over computers and different things within the building, but it was surprising that not that much damage. >> that quake did cause damage to a major road in ferndale. crews have closed off to traffic to repair a large crack in the pavement up there. >> a tentative agreement between the federal bureau of prisons and the former fci dublin inmates includes a public acknowledgment of the sexual abuse endured at that federal prison. attorneys

the epicenter of that quake was also near ferndale. two people were killed and there was a lot of damage. now, 20 years earlier, in april of 1992, there were several quakes in cape mendocino. three strong quakes hit the north coast. the biggest was a magnitude 7.2. that quake did cause a tsunami that reached the coast, and more than 350 people were hurt as a result of that quake. >> the earthquake yesterday was felt across a wide part of the northern california coast. some people as far south as santa cruz say they felt the shaking from 300 miles away. the santa cruz area was under the tsunami warning, and that raised concerns for people along the waterfront. visitors were advised to move away from beaches and low lying areas. >> it just, you know, suddenly it felt like somebody was like bouncing on my back bumper and i thought it was one of my friends coming up. i'm looking at my mirrors. i didn't see anything. and i was like, we just have an earthquake. and yeah, apparently we did. when you feel it, you don't know how long it's going

this is near near in humboldt county, near eureka, near a small town called petrolia and closer to ferndale as well. so that's that was where you can feel the strong shaking. and then down in the bay area, some reports of some weak shaking here, it looks like maybe some light shaking in parts of mendocino county. so this is all reported to the usgs. so taking a look here once again that warning has been canceled. there is the epicenter that magnitude seven quake. it was kind of changing around in terms of the intensity with maybe a six, five, six, seven. and then then then it was actually confirmed a 7.0. and as you would expect, you've been hearing about this with with the aftershocks. these are all of the aftershocks reported around the region. this is above a magnitude 2.0. and as we in fact some more population here on this map here. so if i were to put a big box around all these, there's a tally and it's showing you about 49 reports and the maximum magnitude was right around a magnitude five in that area. and with this much energy released, you would expect more aftershocks for this po

this is near ferndale just before 11:00 and several aftershocks rattled towns. now that aftermath was immediate and redway water sprayed from the ceiling sprinkler system, the lights and sprinklers look everything in the shop. smart lost power there, forcing that grocery store to close. i got here at 12 and it was just a mess. the floors were just really, really wet. we had about almost an inch of water in here and over at the garberville smoke shop, workers there swept up those items, shattered on the floor and just outside rio del blue slide road, cracked open. look at that lane, now closed with cones. officials say that there was not a lot of apparent structural damage on buildings or homes, and there were no immediate reports of anyone being hurt. marcus. many people who live in half moon bay. a beautiful look for you, right now, but they are questioning why tsunami sirens never went off along their coast following those powerful earthquakes. cell phones across the bay area blared with that tsunami warning alert, but the local sirens never went off. one woma

this is ferndale. so very close to the epicenter of the strongest quake that happened this morning. and then of course, there were the subsequent aftershocks that we've been feeling. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking all of those. and are we starting to see them diminish in in strength and frequency yet we're seeing still a lot of frequency. but it is definitely diminishing with the intensity. so let's recap what happened because we had at 1044 that initial report of that earthquake that happened off the shore and then we also had another one that was over land that was in humboldt county. that was a 6.0. and since then we've had a lot of minor earthquakes that have happened. all of these small circles indicate where we are seeing the lesser magnitude earthquakes. and as of right now, we're up to 60. actually, 61 for the one that's not within this query bo. but we have seen a lot of shaking offshore and a few of them have been over land as well for northern california. and the reason why we see this as a very active tectonic area is because we have the meeting of all of thes

nearby ferndale. they certainly felt the shaking this morning. many things on the shelves at the valley grocery took a tumble onto the floor when the quake hit. same goes for people's homes where stuff that wasn't secured fell down quickly. luckily, we're not hearing about any major damage or injuries in that community. the owners of a wine shop were pretty surprised this morning when they entered. they found most of the wine still on the shelves. bottles which did fall did not break, so it never hurts to be lucky. about two years ago, a 6.4 earthquake things were certainly a different story. there was a lot of damage, a lot of injuries, and damage pretty much all across the county. in fact, at that liquor store that we were at maybe about 25 minutes ago, there were wires across all of the shelves because they didn't want bottles falling off for the next earthquake. of course, it happened. this morning and the wires didn't do any, any, any good. the, the quake was just so forceful it forced the bottles over the wire and onto the floor. so even pr
