so, and that's, you know, the chapter that ferraro's this that really -- ferraro's in that really deals with, basically, what happens to feminism in the '80s. that's part of the story as well, sort of the professionalization and institutionalization of a lot of things that were really radical in the '60s and '70s and done in a very grassroots and ad hoc way. sexual harassment, you know, with -- there was, the term didn't even exist until 1975, right? when these feminist focus groups, you know, came up with it. by the end of the '80s, you know, the majority of fortune 500 companies had, you know, training and programs in sexual harassment awareness. and the law of the land, important supreme court decisions had come down not only on the side of unwelcome advances, but also hostile work environment. things of that, so the law was more spelled out. so that's a sampling, i think. yes. >> your book mentioned there was a -- i mean, it may be big now, but then it was a smaller, parallel movement on the right. oddly enough, not everyone on the right was happy with ronald reagan. i mean, they ha

and geraldine ferraro, the person i saw on tv, called me. said, carolyn, you should really think about running for congress. and there were other people calling me too. i said, i'm a nurse. what do i know about politics? but you know what, if i was going to try and do something, then i had to run. everybody told me i was going to lose. maybe i would have. but i didn't. i won. but geraldine was always there to give advice. you know, just because you're a woman doesn't mean you can't be tough. just because you're a woman you can be tough and you can be gentle. and you have to use that to get legislation done. well, here i am in congress and i'm proud to be following the footsteps of geraldine ferraro. i would use the words, the kind words that people used for her on myself like pioneer or trailblazer. i actually followed geraldine and her advice to come to washington and try to make a difference. like so many women in politics today, geraldine helped me when i went from private citizen to candidate to public official. she opened so many doors

[laughter] >> so the reporters said to her when she landed at her next stop, did you mean, you know, that it rhymes with rich that -- and she said, i would never say that geraldine ferraro is a witch. [laughter] now as opposed to that some of the reporters said years later that they thought it was a preconceived comment that it was planned that mrs. bush was too much of a political professional to say something like that to reporters and not understand the application. they thought she meant to get into a jab but then something to retreat into so that was a comment but it follows her to this day. >> how was she as a mother and not especially to laura bush? >> she has tried to have cordial relations with all of her children i have been told from time to time that to the two of them have a respectful but someone distance relationship i cannot attest to that myself. there is a story and i do not know if it is true or not to that when laura bush was first brought up to kennebunkport to meet the extended family, she met to george's grandmother, dorothy bush the first president bush mother and she said to her what do you do? what is your story? and supposedly laura bush responded i read
