. >>> so, let's big deeper on the crisis in cuba with nyu history professor ferrer. the author of "cuba and american history." professor, thank you for being with us. glad you could join us. i want to play some sound from a protester skirting the internet blockade. he believes this is going to be a turning point, a new chapter in cuba's history. he says people are no longer afraid of the regime. here's more of what he shared with me. >> you want to put me in prison? i'm already in prison. i can't walk around the streets. i'm already in prison. i mind can't be free. what do you want me to do? >> ada, how do you sort of navigate the two opposing things that we're seeing? the anti-government protestations, followed by what the cuban government is stages today? does this feel like the beginning of change in cuba? >> well, hi, boris, thank you for having me, first of all. as a historian, my sense is it's too soon to tell how lasting the effect of the protests will be. but it is certainly true that these protests are unprecedented. we haven't seen anything like them in 60

ada ferrer joins me now. she's a cuban-american historian and professor at nyu. welcome.ssor, is will this lead to anything other than a further crackdown and more oppression? >> thanks, fareed, for having me. first of all, as a historian, i always have to start off by warning you that it's way too soon to tell what the result and what the legacy of these unprecedented protests will be. i think there are three things that we have to watch for. as i said, nothing like this has happened in -- i would say in 60 degrees, since 1960 or so. so we'll have to see if the fact that these protests happened, that they were extended across the island in more than 30 cities and towns, the fact that it happened makes the prospect of anti-government mobilization, anti-government protests more thinkable, more imaginable for average citizens. so we'll have to wait and see if that translates, again, for ordinary cubans into participating in and heeding the calls to protest. so that's one thing we have to watch for. the second thing we have to watch for, as you mentioned, is government repre

ferrer in l.a. county has done. what st. louis is recommending. i think the indoor-mask mandates were lifted too soon because the problem is that we're not asking for proof of vaccination. so, if you have an area, let's say, where only 50% of people have been vaccinated. and no one around you is wearing a mask indoors. you know that you're, also, surrounded by unvaccinated people. and so, i think, in those situations, if you are not asking for proof of vaccination, everybody should be wearing a mask. because otherwise, you e've jus made that space basically unsafe for children who can't be vaccinated, for immunocompromised people. i do also think that the level of community transmission, also, really matters. think of the vaccine as a really good raincoat. if it's drizzling, we're fine. but if there is a huge hurricane or thunderstorm, you may need better protection. you may need a mask and a vaccine. and so, i do think it makes sense to have indoor mandates, actually, starting to come back, especially in places with high-community transmission. >
