the operator of the ferry says it lost contact with the rebel queen after it sent a distress signal. our correspondent is watching from sydney and says it's impossible to know what happened to those unaccounted for. >> the numbers range from 300 to 350. the latest rescue numbers we have are about 219, which even if you take the conservative figure of 300 means 80-plus people are still missing. with darkness now in the area. i spoke to the emergency authorities a few moments ago asking if the rescue operation will continue into the darkness. they have had eight ships and helicopters and one australian ship. whether they can all operate at night or if they want to operate at night, the people i spoke to simply didn't know but a major rescue operation encouraging with more than 200 rescued but still an awful lot of people unaccounted for with the sinking of the ferry. >> how the happened, it's difficult to know. the prime minister papua, new guinea said the cause of it was unknown. earlier i spoke to a different emergency rescue worker. he said it could be one of three causes, bad wheth

it has been 24 hours since the ferry has gone down. there are several ships on scene, several helicopters looking for any chance of survivors, but the suggestion is the people trapped on the vessel are not alive. the ship went down in rough weather 24 hours ago, and all of these survivors talked about how awful it was trying to get off the vessel. once they got off, they had to stay in the water until they got picked up. 24 hours on, this is not a recovery mission, although there are ships on the scene just in case. >> information seems difficult to come by, very few pictures, even confusion about if the ferry sent a distress signal. everything happened so quickly, they could not? >> you are right about the information, it has been a blank from start to finish. relatives went to the shipping office on the mainland to throw stones at the office, so angry they were with the lack of information. the confusion about the distress signal, was it sent or not? all we know is the boat was hit by three big waves. it rolled, then sank quickly. wh

the ferries are offering more services. ac transit is offering of similar service. it would pick up san franciscans at treasure island and take them to the east bay. it is something we have been looking at doing with the treasure island development plan. to make all this piloting easy for people, we were going to use the clipper card in expanded ways. one of the things we're doing is allowing people to pre-load and pre purchased clippers so we're working with mtc so someone could buy a high value card. the boat -- hotels are interested in purchasing them. they would see this as a fantastic marketing device for their hospitality. and let someone who comes to san francisco airport know that you do not have to worry about renting a car. the card you have received is sure to get on board, muni, and your ticket to the america's cup. this is to brand the clipper card and it is something we are working closely with these other examples. even san diego. we were down there a couple months ago. the idea that we could use this as a commemorative opportunity to celebrate americ

the ferry building is something people could see. we wanted to be able to tell the history and draw the connection to dark patch and the other neighborhoods nearby. we offered a broad range of land uses. we wanted to see what was out there. we would like to see who would like to use the buildings and bring them back to life. the rfp asked the developers to respond. what we are doing today is starting the process. each person will give a brief presentation. we will come back and do a set of interviews. we're doing research. we are checking with banks and doing all of that. in february, we will be back with a recommendation to see how well they met the goals we just walked through. the criteria is whether they have done this project before -- this type of project before, financial capacity, how well the rehabilitation concept meets our objectives and goals. the last thing is feasibility, will it work? can it get through the historic preservation approval process? we have announced for rehabilitation concept. we have asked each develope
