welcome to the ferry building's birthday, yoo hoo! what great weather we have to celebrate. i'm elaine executive director of the port of san francisco and i have the distinct honor of opening up this grand celebration. as the executive director of the port, my team and i have the awesome responsibility of 7 and a half miles of water front and it includes this they majestic building. i want to thank the people who put this together, lillian and justin of my group. thank you people behind the scenes who made it happen. [applause] we've got some very special people here today to make this celebration very grand. we have our mayor, mayor london breed, who will speak shortly and we have supervisor peskin and also, thank you, and also we have commissioner ed herrington joining us today. thank you ed herrington. so it was exactly in 1898 when the first vessel arrived here, opening the newly fashion pier and opening an era of prosperity and diversity for our city. for nearly 40 years, it was the bay crossing that welcomed everyone in and out of the city. the bridge went up in 1936.

i just came by ferry. i had a visitor in town, came by ferry yesterday to the island and what a glorious way and what a glorious trip that is with the views of both the city, as well as the island. when we arrived there was-it was monday, so no place to eat lunch, no place to grab even a coffee, and certainly if we had those types of things, restaurants and cafes, many more people would come. the other thing is that we have an art master plan for the island and as you know, there is a first instillation of the sculpture-the park isn't yet open on hilltop park, but i believe as we have art placed around the park that there is going to be more people who will come to look at the art, so this is going to be a very exciting place and this is a excellent start. there is much information that we need to digest, and i'm glad that you've made this first presentation and we look forward to really working with all the partners on treasure island in trying to make it more economically viable. thank you very much. so,
